Royals roundup: Bad things happen to bad teams

Well, that was ugly. The Royals were patching together a not disastrous road trip when the team arrived in Arlington for four games with the Texas Rangers. Royals fans were feeling pretty good on Thursday night, as they watched the club take the lead after falling behind 8-0. (These boys have heart, I tell ya!) Oh, and did we mention…

A mixtape for tonight’s hardcore extravaganza at the Bottleneck

Being as how it’s never too early to start blasting hardcore (at least in our opinion), here’s a brief sampler of tunes to get you in the mood for tonight’s show at the Bottleneck with Converge, Coalesce, Lewd Acts, Black Breath, and Canyons. The songs may contain profanity, but we can’t really understand a single word anyone’s saying. Therefor, you…

A death investigation is underway after authorities discovered a body in a wooded area in Miami County on Sunday. A vehicle linked to a missing person from Lee’s Summit was found in a parking lot at Middle Creek State Fishing Lake on Saturday around 8:10 p.m., according to multiple reports (here, here, here, here and here). The Kansas City Public Library caps off its Big Read initiative with a presentation by the author of this year’s selected novel,…

Egyptian Exhibit at Nelson-Atkins Museum

Hundreds of people swarmed Nelson-Atkins Art Museum this Mother’s Day weekend to catch a glimpse of Egyptian funerary pieces, including a mummy and a seven-foot inner coffin. The grand opening highlighted the craftsmanship of artisans in the ancient civilizations of the Near East, Egypt, Greece and Rome.

Brian Posehn is “More Metal Than You”

First, comedian Brian Posehn took on cookie-cutter screamo bands with “Metal By Numbers,” from his debut album Live In: Nerd Rage!!!. Now, he’s declaring himself to be “More Metal Than You” in this single from his new album, Fart and Wiener Jokes, which is out now on Relapse. “I torched a church in Norway — I”m more metal than you.”…

A banker that you can trust: Comment of the Week

When you run your own bank, getting a haircut probably isn’t a priority. Denny Hardin, who ran the Private Bank of Denny Hardin, clearly isn’t concerned with getting a trim. He has other things to worry about — like a 21-count indictment for fraud, announced earlier this week. Hardin and his bank’s bad relationship with the federal government was profiled…

These shoes: Clothes Whores Pet Peeve No. 3

What’s worse than Crocs? You’re looking at ’em. Scott Fitness trainer Keith Earl is modeling the latest in disastrously ugly footwear. They’re called Vibram Five-Fingers and the people who swear by them are typically runners, climbers and hikers. It fits right in with the latest fad health craze, the Caveman Diet. (The Troglodyte Diet just didn’t have the same ring.)…

Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved. The official first day of spring might have been March 21 elsewhere in the country, but it’s Friday, May 7, in Kansas City. That’s when Fresher Than Fresh Snow Cones opens for the season at First Friday in the Crossroads….

Proceeds from the sale of the comp will go to fund publication of Lubricated, a magazine out of northern California “that supports the collective effort of independent artists, writers and…

MerleJam at Knuckleheads

Proceeds go to the Midwest Transplant Network, and Ray Wylie Hubbard headlines tonight’s show (it’s country-themed; tomorrow’s…

Leading site for convention hotel has a somewhat murky past

Officials in Kansas City, Missouri, have targeted the site of the Power & Light Building for a 1,000-room convention hotel. If the project gets the go ahead, a little environmental cleanup work will be required. Decades ago, a powerhouse operated at the site. Later, Kansas City Power & Light removed an underground storage tank that had been used to fuel…

Sunkist Solar Fusion: Don’t get lured in

The orange-and-black packaging on the Sunkist Solar Fusion tricked me into adding the two-liter to my shopping cart this week. But like the brightly colored clown fish, it was just a setup for the harsh sting of the anemone inside.  This beverage is an unfortunate blend of energy drink and soft drink — I’ll call it a soft energy drink….

El Chupacabra stalks the night in Lee’s Summit, murders three goats

The beast walks among us, searching for goat blood. Dark mysteries on the farm lands of Lee’s Summit. Thursday morning, Dawn Applequist awoke to find one of her goats dead with the entire side of its body ripped off. It was the third goat to be murdered in the night in as many days. “Whatever is doing it, it’s very…

Friday: Do More Than Just Booze.

Chelsea Handler — famous for Chelsea Lately, her late night comedy show on E! — is sounding off at Starlight tonight on her Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang tour. Catch the comedian’s bitchy stories by buying tickets here; last time we checked, there were still seats left. If you want Chelsea to insult you in person, you can stop by Rainy Day…

Get Up Kids’ Simple Science a study in transition

It’s a damned good thing the new Get Up Kids EP, Simple Science, starts with “Your Petty Pretty Things.” It’s the only song of the four on the record to really come close to the earlier Get Up Kids formula of simple poppy rock ‘n’ roll that builds to a cathartic release when it hits the chorus. It’s understandable that…

What’s up with the Peppercorn Duck Club?

The Peppercorn Duck Club Two decades ago, when I was counting ballots for a local business magazine’s “Best Of” competition, I wasn’t a bit surprised that the Peppercorn Duck Club at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center garnered lots and lots of votes. This upscale restaurant was enormously popular as a destination dining spot well into the 1990s; it offered a…
