Memo to Sprint employees: Don’t be a hero

Yesterday, our sister paper in Denver reported an incident in which two Sprint outlet store employees were fired for chasing down a shoplifter from the Apple store in Denver’s Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Mike McGee and Paul Shoemaker were on their break on April 16 when they heard a security guard yell, “Somebody stop that guy!” The Sprint employees saw…

The First Annual Lawrence/KC Air Guitar Championship at the Jackpot, May 5

Think you’re an air guitar bad-ass on par with “Mean” Eric Melin? Well, the 2009 KC Regional U.S. Air Guitar champ has organized the first annual Lawrence/Kansas City Air Guitar Championship. While not affiliated with the USAG — which means you’re not qualifying for anything other than fabulous prizes — it’s still a chance to get up on stage and…

Shiprocked more ship’s log than compelling narrative

Steve Conway’s book, Shiprocked: Life On The Waves With Radio Caroline, is an odd duck. It manages to conveigh a large amount of information regarding Conway’s time about the ship Ross Revenge as a DJ for the UK’s Radio Caroline pirate station. However, at the same time, it really doesn’t manage to evoke any sort of emotional reaction from the…

Where was I eating? Here!

%{}% Milano Italian Dining serves this decadent dessert This week’s “Where Am I Eating?” question must have been a little too daunting for our readers, since regular commenters like Meesha were much more interested in eating the featured pastry than figuring out which restaurant was serving it. The answer, by the way, is Milano Italian Dining in the Crown Center…

Rush documentary due out this June

This is my one and only Gene Shallit moment: “Who else thinks that people should RUSH to the theater to see this movie?” I am so very, very sorry. Still, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage looks to be interesting when it comes out this summer. The trailer’s best quote, and the one that has me thinking this is going to…

Lap dances survive in Kansas … for now

Kansas strip club enthusiasts, your laps are still a legal landing spot for dancers of the exotic kind. The Kansas Senate deadlocked — a vote of 20-20 — Wednesday on a bill (S.B. 514) that would have regulated strip clubs and adult bookstores, sending the bill back to committee. The bill is pretty much the same thing we’ve seen in…

Sunflower Seed versus Snickerdoodle Cookies

Locavores are going about things the wrong way. If you really want to convince someone to eat local, you start with the cookies and then you sneak in the vegetables. In that spirit, two area bakeries are selling cookies made from ingredients you likely have in your kitchen — although you’d be hard pressed to match these cookies in a…

Sean Bones at the Jackpot

Energy feeds energy. Forgive the New Age connotations, but when it comes to a rock show, the platitudes are true: the more you give, the more you’re going to get. This is why the Sean Bones show on Wednesday night at the Jackpot was less than stellar. It wasn’t any fault of the band – well, not really. It’s the…

Californos: Dogs welcome

“Bring Your Dog to Dinner Thursdays” returns to Californos tonight. “It’s a fun little way to grab people’s interest,” says Aaron Barksdale-Burns, Californos’ sales manager.  Dogs are welcome on the Westport restaurant’s outdoor patio, where Californos has homemade, bone-shaped dog biscuits and water bowls. Meanwhile, their human owners can enjoy specials on Boulevard pints — $2 off Pale Ale and…

Charles Juba claims he isn’t a neo-Nazi, but he’d like his Klan robes and Nazi pillowcases back

Charles Juba: not just a racist, but a lying racist When Charles Juba was confronted over his white supremacist past Monday night, he responded, “I’m a father. I’m a business owner. I’ve walked away from my past over five years ago.” But it appears as if Juba is not only an active neo-Nazi, he’s a dishonest active neo-Nazi. According to court records, as…

Breakfast Buffet: Thursday, April 29

%{}% Here’s video from a recent presentation on urban farming in Kansas City. Grits and the eggplant and broccoli quiche at You Say Tomato get a rave review. A San Francisco dining critic suggests that the Justus Drugstore and American Restaurant would be welcomed with open arms in San Francisco. At Costcos around the nation, jokesters are putting up fake…

Chuck D blasts Arizona’s politics

When you’ve been blasted by Public Enemy in the past for your racist policies, it should’ve been expected by the government of Arizona that Chuck D would step up and rip ’em a new one. That’s what Chuck does on his new track, “Tear Down This Wall,” which samples that previous indictment of Arizona politics, “By the Time I Get…

It was a great week to be called for jury duty

On Monday, Circuit Court Judge W. Stephen Nixon told a roomful of Jackson County citizens that they were lucky to have been summoned for jury duty. Only two trials were scheduled this week, Nixon said, and the parties in each were likely to reach settlements before noon, meaning everyone would be dismissed. I was there because I’d received my first…
