Down the hatch: Boulevard’s Rye-on-Rye

Boulevard’s Smokestack series releases have come fast and furious this month, with two new 750 ml bottles hitting liquor store shelves in the past two weeks. We’ll uncork a bottle of Dark Truth Stout next week, but today belongs to Rye-on-Rye.  Since Rye-on-Rye’s release last Monday, the ale — aged in oak barrels from Templeton Rye — has been getting…

More Friday meatless and fish-less meals

Fill up a plate, it’s not a sin Last Friday we listed a few church fish fries for Fat City readers who observe the tradition of meatless Fridays during Lent. But then we heard from observant diners who don’t care for seafood options such as boiled and fried shrimp, deep-fried fish or salmon croquettes. One Fat City reader e-mailed us…

This is, quite honestly, the furthest I’ve ever had to stretch to post something on Wayward Blog. However, I’m such a fan of the performer and the cause which the performance benefits that I have to share this with everyone. Since my wife and I have a kid who’s still in elementary school, we’re usually home on Saturday nights, barring…

Sounds like prosecutors in the Mohler family sex abuse case have their work cut out for them. According to an Associated Press story, one of the claims leveled against six Mohler men might sink the whole case: The claim that Burrell Mohler Jr. forced his daughters to help him kill a man. Six siblings have backed up the claims that…

This is Burlesque at the Uptown slideshow

Kansas City Society of Burlesque founder Lucky DeLuxe organized This Is Burlesque, which brought members of four local burlesque groups as well as other independent performers (including men) to the Conspiracy Room at the Uptown last night. %{}% At Jack Gage’s American Tavern, everything is fine if not spectacular. Here’s an ode to delicious loose leaf tea — and a warning about drinking too many cups of said delicious tea. How scales should really work: a re-interpretation of the display window on your bathroom scale. It’s not quite a plague, but it’s apparently raining fish in Australia….

Video: Free State High lip dubs “Let’s Groove”

Being as how we posted the Lawrence High lip dub of “Kids In America,” it’s only fair that we head across town for Free State’s entry into the competition. While also going with a pretty retro choice (in this case, Earth Wind & Fire’s “Let’s Groove”), they one-up the stakes by doing everything backward. If you poke around online, you…

This will destroy America For once, Kansas City is ahead of the trends. K2 synthetic marijuana first made headlines in Kansas last year (mostly for the paranoid, thuggish reaction to it documented in this recent Pitch feature, “Fake Reefer Madness”). Since then, K2 has appeared in New Orleans, Chicago (courtesy of Mancow’s radio show) and now Philadelphia. Categories: News Tags:…
