The best post-Thanksgiving savings are tomorrow’s free HIV screenings

Tomorrow is World Aids Day, which means it’s a good day to go get yourself tested. There’s plenty of free screenings, so there’s no reason not to get tested if you don’t know your HIV-status. On the Kansas side, the Unified Government Public Health Department has scheduled free HIV testing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is needed, just go to…

Incoming: Fang at the Jackpot, December 12

Fang is a band that’s probably better-known for the fact that their frontman Sammytown (formerly Sam McBride) spent six years in prison than anything they’ve actually recorded. Now, that’s not to say that Fang doesn’t deserve the “punk legends” tag they’ve got on that flier. “The Money Will Roll Right In” off their debut LP Landshark is a classic, covered…

Will Chiefs turn to Charlie Weis once he’s fired by pope?

When the NFL season ends, and the Chiefs put a button on three consecutive losing seasons, rookie head coach Todd Haley will surely reconsider his decision to take on the duties of offensive coordinator. (Algebra for Haley to consider: Handing off the laminated play card = More time to yell at people.) Should Haley decide to delegate the play calling…

More sophisticated drinking games

Anybody can play quarters or kings, but when was the last time you had a real mental challenge while drinking? Puzzle Time Wine was one of the first to offer up a different kind of drinking game,  making its mark almost five years ago at Trader Joe’s with a interactive wine label that doubled as a crossword puzzle. (After a…

Let’s bring back the lunch box

When the Ulterior Epicure remembered a childhood metal lunchbox featuring the cast and crew of The Dukes of Hazzard, it seemed to raise a good point about whether we have let the practical demands of bringing our lunch to work take away some of the joy we once felt sitting down at cafeteria tables and snapping open our decorated boxes….

Man shoots TV in Wichita … Elvis, is that you?

A man shot his TV in Wichita, and I gotta ask, was it Elvis? My thoughts immediately turned to The King when I heard the story. I doubt Robert Goulet was on the screen this time. The Wichita Eagle reports that police confiscated the man’s guns after he made suicidal comments. Aww. Now it’s just sad. Here’s your Simpsons pick…

Download (Pretty) Girls & Lasers’ Latest Mix

(Pretty) Girls & Lasers is a DJ duo from New York City, made up of Jack McCloy and Levi McDonough. They’ve got a name that sums up why you’d want to go see them in a nice little package: girls (that are pretty, and ostensibly dancing) and lasers. Oh, and beats. Which makes girls dance, and watching girls dance to,…

LJ finds feet, runs 107 yards as a Bengal

What is it with former Kansas City pro sports players putting up great numbers as soon as they sign with other teams? In his second game since being released by the Chiefs and signing with the Cincinnati Bengals, Larry Johnson ran for 107 yards in the Bengals’ 16-7 win over the Browns. Johnson averaged 4.9 yards per carry on Sunday…

Prepare for a peppermint invasion

The cool rush of peppermint always accompanies the onset of winter, so be ready for the invasion of peppermint-flavored drinks and eats at fast food spots around the city. Dunkin’ Donuts, which just opened in Overland Park, has a chocolate mint donut and peppermint mocha latte. The chocolate mint donut is a chocolate-glazed, chocolate donut with crushed peppermint on top,…

Cyber Monday is a scam

I’d never heard of “Cyber Monday” and the supposed boost in Internet sales that accompany the return to the office the Monday after Thanksgiving until NPR reported on it three or four years ago. Despite the fact that it seems to be something cooked up to bolster sales frenzies, people are always attracted to bargains. And, frankly, who wants to…

Grinch steals Christmas cross

Not even a cross is safe from thieves. KSHB Channel 41 reports that someone stole the 5-foot-tall cross from Bob Mercer’s yard in Liberty (pictured in the screen shot on the right). Mercer’s sons helped him make the cross, and they’ve displayed it for more than 20 years. Until now. Mercer told KSHB: “I just hope the people who took…

A cereal decision tree

The cereal aisle seems to grow every year, making the choice for your bowl more difficult. Eating the Road has set up a flowchart to help you determine which cereal you should be eating. It’s a way to narrow down the options between gravel-like substances (Grape Nuts), pretentiousness (Kashi), and whether you care about the roof of your mouth (Cap’n…

One well-hung man and his holiday lights

Kansas City weather was gorgeous over the long Thanksgiving weekend — perfect for procrastinators who still hadn’t gotten around to hanging their holiday lights. Unfortunately, it looked as if tragedy was about to strike at a house on the corner of State Line and West 61st Street: Jeez, had this guy’s ladder really fallen out from under him? Was he…

Concert Review: Bandit Teeth, Muscle Worship at the Jackpot

There’s often a dearth of the “show must go on” attitude among opening bands when the headliner cancels. In last night’s case, Brooklyn’s Talk Normal and its tour mates, Wet Hair, got stranded in Denver due to a van breakdown and the stage at the Jackpot was given over to local bands. Considering that it was a Sunday night and…

Rightbloggers find the real White House gatecrasher story: Obama’s radical ties

%{}% Last week’s state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was from the beginning fraught with controversy — or what passes for controversy among rightbloggers. First, the dinner menu was leaked. Right Pundits was miffed that “such cultural oddities as potato and eggplant salad, arugula, roasted potato dumplings, and red lentil soup” were to be served. “No American beef…
