Aireoke In Lawrence Tonight

Aireoke is a combination of air guitar and karaoke that was created by “Air Guitar Nation” star Bjorn Turoque, and it’s at the Jackpot in Lawrence tonight. You get to get up on-stage and make like a rock star. You can bring your MP3 player and shred to your favorite tunes (my suggestion? “Headbanger Face Rip” by Municipal Waste or…

Killa City: Trial delayed for men accused of killing Lawrence rapper

The trial of two men accused of killing 28-year-old Lawrence rapper Anthony Vital has been pushed until May 2010, the Lawrence Journal-World reported today. Durrell A. Jones,  24, and Major C. Edwards Jr., 30, are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Vital — a case we profiled in June 2007 (“It’s Hard Out Here for a Player”). Vital’s…

Home brews that go beyond beer

Sloshspot recently offered up a list of 13 alcoholic beverages you can make at home. While some sound like they should be avoided at all costs, others are tempting if only for the challenge of producing something drinkable. The easiest and potentially smoothest (outside of beer) might be hard cider. It’s apple season and that means you’ve got plenty of…

Bill Ayers jokes about writing Obama’s book; Rightbloggers become punchline

We’re not sure where all the birthers went, but we can tell you where they’re going: some of the same folks who questioned whether Obama was really born in the U.S.A. and eligible to be President have started flocking to blogger Backyard Conservative’s claim that famous radical Bill Ayers told her something that proved what rightwing conspiracy theorist Jack Cashill…

The Burger Stand is the creation of Lawrence chef Robert Krause, best known for his seriously upscale Krause Dining at 917 Delaware. Krause added the gourmet burger…

Throwback MP3 of the Week: Old Canes, “Taxi On Vermont” (demo)

Usually, when an ex-girlfriend tells you that her friend Chris has recorded some new songs, and she can get you a demo, you’re inclined to shudder. Your next step is to politely take the CD-R handed you, promise to listen to it, and add it to the stack of other demos you never intend to put in the stereo…unless, of…

The honest truth about tipping

Last month the debate raged on Fat City whether 15 percent was still an adequate tip, but now the question is whether the concept of tips should even exist. In a recent essay, columnist David Mitchell of The Observer tries to explain why he feels tips are outmoded: If you’re going to a restaurant to be served and eat a…

Justice seekers celebrate the Till Bill’s anniversary

Kansas City’s Alvin Sykes helped re-open an investigation into the murder of Emmett Till and spent years urging Congress to secure funds for the U.S. Justice Department to investigate unsolved murders from the Civil Rights era. His efforts paid off a year ago today, when George W. Bush signed into law the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act. To…

New fall lunch menu at Cafe Sebastienne

While there are plenty of new and interesting exhibits at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, diners should be excited to learn about the new fall lunch menu at Cafe Sebastienne. Although Executive Chef Jennifer Maloney changes the dinner menu weekly to account for seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, the lunch menu changes only seasonally.   The two new dishes that…

Insane Clown Posse Juggalos speak!

The world of the Juggalo is opaque and disturbing. We thought it was best to let the “family” members of the Insane Clown Posse speak for themselves. In the tradition of Heavy Metal Parking Lot, we present, Juggalo Sidewalk. Categories: News Tags: Heavy Metal Parking Lot, insane clown posse, juggalos

Kind of Blue At 50

I’d never owned a copy of Mile Davis’ Kind of Blue until a couple months ago, when I bought a copy for $2 at a friend’s yard sale. I’d heard songs here and there, as I subbed various Jazz In the Morning shifts at KJHK, but never listened to the album start to finish. You ever listen to something —…

Hunt is on in S.M. Park, but Jason Miller promises more drama

%{}% Shortly before midnight on September 30th, Jason Miller wrote an e-mail to his supporters. “Let us grieve for the deer who will die tomorrow,” he said, “but continue to fight relentlessly for those who remain alive.” This week, I wrote about Miller, the founder of Bite Club of KC, and the battle to save the deer at Shawnee Mission…

A nation of calorie counters is still fat

The results are in from New York City’s great experiment to determine whether posting the caloric content of menu items actually affects customers’ behavior. New York University and Yale University recently studied the purchasing habits of people at McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken in the neighborhoods of New York City with the highest rates of obesity.  About…

Kaw Valley Farm Tour, the abbreviated version

There’s nothing like a Farms Tour to build a healthy appetite Seventeen farms participated in last weekend’s Kaw Valley Farm Tour, sponsored by the Kaw Valley Agri-Tourism Council, but I only made it to three. That’s because I got hungry and tired of driving on Kansas back roads, so we decided to stop touring and venture over to Lawrence for…

Killa City: Travis D. Ybarra charged with killing Brian K. Smith

Jackson County prosecutors charged Travis D. Ybarra yesterday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Brain K. Smith. Prosecutors allege that 21-year-old Ybarra fatally shot 24-year-old Smith, who was sitting in Ybarra’s car, on September 28. Police found Smith lying in the street around 4:11 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Ybarra’s girlfriend later…

Concert review: Sound Tribe Sector 9 at Liberty Hall

Review and photos by Elgin Smith I will admit that I felt a little out of place without some glow sticks at Tuesday’s Sound Tribe Sector 9 show in Lawrence. The group’s combination of electronica and jam-band styles attracts those who enjoy brandishing them, and last night’s audience was an interesting stoner-meets-raver experience, a mix of two types of people…

Fried foods without the oil!

The world of food science has come up with the radiant fryer, which purports to be able to create the consistency and taste of fried food without dumping it in a fry-o-lator. Food processing engineer Kevin Keener, Ph.D., of Purdue University, has invented an oven that exposes food to infrared light in order to cook it faster — meaning the…

Concert review: Wilco at Crossroads KC at Grinders

Review by Richard Gintowt Photos by Scott Spychalski It seems like just the other day I was grumbling about great ’90s bands that have been on a statistically predictable decline this decade (Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins … you get the picture). But not Wilco. Not our precious, reinventing, lineup-changing, critic-pleasing, two-encore-playing Wilco. If you love Wilco, you go to every show….

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, October 7

%{}% A trip to Taco Via is a trip back to the ’80s, where tacos were simpler and fashion choices regrettable. KC Beer Blog adds another contributor. Maloney & Porcelli has launched an Expense-A-Steak gadget, which allows you to generate a fake receipt with the real amount that you spent at the New York City steakhouse. Reddit has an interesting…

Tonight: Brand New at the Uptown

As you may recall, I quite enjoyed Brand New’s recent release, Daisy. I’m not alone, as Spin’s given it four stars, and it received a 90% rating on Absolutepunk. You get your chance to see the new songs tonight at the Uptown, when the band takes the stage after openers Manchester Orchestra. Brand New – At the Bottom – Daisy…
