Bickering between gay political clubs continues

The treasurer for the Four Freedoms Democratic Club sent an e-mail yesterday scolding the Kansas City Pride Democratic Club, which the Missouri Ethics Commission levied a massive $124,212 fine against last week for failing to turn in reports. Miriam Hennosy, treasurer for the Four Freedoms Democratic Club, chastised Kansas City Pride in e-mail, and noted that Four Freedoms is “the…

Prefuse 73 Now Opening For Tortoise

When their show at the Beaumont on September 30 was first announced, the opener for Tortoise was originally Chicago’s Pit Er Pat. That has changed, and Prefuse 73 will take their place. I don’t know about you, but this show just changed from a “maybe” to a “must see.” Prefuse 73’s crazy-ass glitch-hop is a far better counterpoint than Pit…

Review: Black Clover Beerfest

72 beers. That’s my excuse. 72*hic* beers. The idea of mounting a hip-hop show at the Riot Room after the audience and the performers have spent three hours sipping beers from 30 different breweries sounds like a recipe for disaster. Clearly, though, Black Label president Jeremy Willis knows what he’s doing. The only thing that went down in flames on…

Down the hatch: Izze Esque and Izze Birch Beer

The intersection of the markets for bottled water and all-natural juice lies squarely in Boulder, Colorado, where the Izze Beverage Company has been making its sparkling juice beverages for the past seven years. In an effort to find out whether that should be your starting point or the place you avoid, Fat City recently sat down with two twist-off bottles…

Game on, drinkers or drink on, gamers?

Like athletes looking for an edge, beverage companies hope gamers are seeking ways to improve their performance or fuel a late-night session. The latest offering is from the soda company that seems to customize everything: Jones Soda’s limited edition of Dungeons & Dragons-inspired flavors. While a healing potion sounds like it could come in handy, I’m not sure I want…

Vandals tag Penguin Park with anti-Obama graffiti

Saw the anti-Obama vandalism of Penguin Park on KMBC Channel 9. So I drove out there this morning with the camera. Most of the anti-Obama messages was already cleaned up. Except this one. Louis Cummings, the guy in charge of the park’s clean up (that’s him power washing the kangaroo), says this was the first time that he’d seen anti-Obama…

Pearl Jam takes local soldier’s request in Chicago.

Many thanks to Justin Kendall for handing me his September 17, 2009, issue of Rolling Stone, wherein Pearl Jam, at its August 24 show at the United Center in Chicago, took a request from the brother of Tomas Young. Readers will remember that Young was wounded in Iraq in 2004; a bullet left him paralyzed from the chest down. He…

New menus across the city

Each new season brings renewed hope for restaurants around the city. Chefs have the chance to design new dishes based on seasonal ingredients and get recharged with a completely retooled menu. Happy Gillis launched a new breakfast and lunch menu last week. New for breakfast is a croque madame (Bichelmeyer ham, swiss, pear and grain mustard topped with a soft…

Photos: Buckcherry at the Beaumont

As sometimes still unfortunately happens, our reviewer got blocked at the gate (not on list, miscommunication, blah blah). Our photographer, however, did get in. Enjoy these photos of Buckcherry playing the Beaumont on Friday, September 18, 2009. Categories: Music

Flier of the Week: Hull at the Riot Room

Gravity Ink did this amazing watercolor painting for tomorrow night’s Riot Room show. Combining equal parts impending doom and beauty, as well as strength and fragility, it’s the perfect match for the bands playing. Touring acts Hull, Salome, and Batillus are all noted purveyors of doom, as are local openers Stull and Auternus. The touring acts are in the midst…

Incoming: The Wonder Years at the Jackpot, October 2

Philadelphia’s the Wonder Years recently undertook their Ghostbus-Tour which, in addition to having one of the cooler tour posters I’ve seen in a while, hits the Jackpot on October 2. It is also a pun that I just got, despite having read the press release half a dozen times since Friday. The Ghostbus-Tour will find the pop-punkers teaming up with…

Wichita Dumpster lovin’ update

The Wichita Eagle updated the story about a couple on a good ol’ fashioned Wichita Dumpster date getting robbed at knife-point. A couple of 44-year-olds were sexing in a Dumpster near the Four Aces Smoke and Liquor store when they were robbed by a couple of knife-wielding thieves a couple of weeks ago. Turns out the woman was familiar with…

Rep. Graves’ hypocrisy worse than any ethics lapse

Last week came word that Missouri Congressman Sam Graves is the subject of an ethics inquiry. Earlier this year, Graves invited a friend to testify before Congress on renewable fuels. Graves did not mention that his wife and the friend, Brooks Hurst, are partners in a company that invests in renewable fuels. Democrats are braying about lies and lined pockets….

Brownback holding town-hall meeting tonight

Weeks after the town-hall meeting fervor and all of Lynn Jenkins’ gaffes, U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback will hold one tonight in Olathe. Brownback is scheduled to speak at 6 p.m. at Mid-America Nazarene University (2030 E. College Way) in the Bell Cultural Event Center. With Kansas Democrats lacking a candidate and the Republican ticket shaping up, Brownback is looking more…

And we’re back …

The Raiders found a way to kick Chiefs fans in their missile launchers with a late rally to win. Matt Cassel connected with Dwayne Bowe on a spectacular touchdown pass to claim the lead with a little less than three minutes left in the game. But the Raiders marched down the field, and Darren McFadden scored on a five-yard run….

For those who comment, we salute you …

Patrick Swayze’s Road House is the only reason I can think of to go to Jasper, Missouri. He frickin’ rips a guys throat out in the flick and epically proclaims, “Pain don’t hurt,” while defending the Jasper’s Double Deuce. Swayze plays Dalton, a world famous bouncer and a philosopher (he does tell his staff to “be nice.” Deep). Swayze died…

Friday Freebies

And once again, we bring you Friday Freebies, wherein we present things to do this weekend that won’t cost you any more than the gas it takes to get to ’em. There are so many festivals going on this weekend, I don’t know where to start. Suffice it to say, they’re the big game in the area as we move…
