Miller Time in K.C.

MillerCoors is relocating its headquarters from Belgian-beer-infested St. Louis to Kansas City. Well, Zona Rosa. Categories: News Tags: MillerCoors

Barf and then feel better

As much as peanut butter and salmonella and the FDA and food poisoning have been in the news, you would think I’d have known that the eminent food-safety blog in the country is based about an hour from Kansas City in Manhattan, Kansas. Barf Blog is run by a Kansas State associate professor of food safety named Dr. Douglas Powell….

Hey, women having abortions, Lance Kinzer wants to show you something

Women having abortions, “principled conservative leader” Lance Kinzer is watching out for your uterus. Yesterday, the Olathe lawmaker introduced his “Bill to Ensure a Woman’s Right to Know and See.” What exactly does Kinzer want you to know and see? A sonogram. And counseling brochures. And a Web site. And he wants you to listen to a heartbeat. And see…

Tonight: James Christos Signing Party at Karma

To celebrate his inking a distro deal with EMI/Gracie, James Christos is inviting folks out to Karma in Westport tonight for a party featuring performances by Christos, Bucc$ and PL of the True Spittaz Click, beats by DJ Sku and, best of all, two-for-one drinks. It’s also an unoffish birthday party for Christos, DJ Shad and (former Pitch writer) Chris…

Kansas and 3.2 percent beer: a slightly buzzed history

Currently, five states have 3.2 beer: Minnesota, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah and Kansas. While Utah loves its weak brine, Colorado is close to eliminating the stuff and Kansas may soon follow. The house will vote on a bill to raise the definition of a cereal malt beverage from a weak-ass 3.2 percent to a manly four percent as defined by this…

Where is it? It’s here!

Here’s the part of the vintage postcard that I cleverly cropped out of yesterday’s “Where is it?” post. Thanks to Fat City resident Karen Geary for the correct guess: King Joy Lo, which was one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Kansas City when the photo for this postcard was taken in 1951. (I’m guessing the date based on the…

KCTV5 IDs mystery woman in Pernice case, conflicts blogger

KCTV Channel 5 got a big scoop Monday, IDing the woman in this surveillance photo taken near the site where Renee Pernice’s cell phone was found. Police released the photo of the woman and the truck, hoping for more tips in the disappearance of Pernice, who has been missing since January 2. Police already knew the woman’s name, but they…

Restaurant week in the Power & Light District

All over the country, cities are celebrating restaurant week. In places like New York, Philadelphia and Denver, it involves hundreds of restaurants. In Kansas City, the scale may be smaller, but the idea is the same. Twelve Power & Light District restaurants are providing discounted prix-fixe menus to entice first-time customers. It’s a win-win. Diners get deals on dinner, while…

No scurvy at the library tonight

That’s because the downtown Central Library is having a speech on citrus. I mentioned in Pitch Forks that chemistry professor Pierre Laszlo has come all the way from Belgium to talk about how citrus has changed the way humans travel. From Southeast Asia to Africa to Portugal and from oranges to limes to lemons, Laszlo recounts the history of citrus….

Stealing Time: Fireworks in Jackson County

Gone Mild stays fixated on the ethics free Jackson County Legislature, which is now allowing nonprofit groups to sell fireworks to increase their revenues. Dan has his doubts. “I attend a lot of nonprofit meetings, I read a lot of nonprofit publications, and I know a lot of nonprofit executives. Never once have I heard anybody propose that fireworks sales…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, 01/27

%{}% There’s something to do with beer in this post but all I could focus on is the accordion table. The largest, most powerful recipe database is, like everything else, now at Google. What’s the world coming to when even Gordon Ramsey is shuttering his restaurants and owes back taxes? Don’t worry — though the boxes don’t say it, thin…

The Download: New Nickel Eye MP3

Before the Strokes reconvene in the studio next month, bassist Nikolai Fraiture is squeaking out a side project with the Britpop outfit, South, as his backing band. From the Nickel Eye band bio: “When The Strokes’ hiatus began taking longer than expected, Nikolai reached into an old shoebox of poems and rants written years ago. With his free time, he…

More creepy Bannister Mall photos

When I heard that Bannister Mall was being torn down, I grabbed a camera and ran out to snap some photos. Warning signs posted on the fence around the abandoned old mall warned trespassers to keep out. I didn’t have the guts to hop the fence. But local musician Lethal D did. The Wayward Blog links to Lethal D’s creepy…

Confucius Say … Crank That: China Learns to Rap

Hip-hop has always been fascinated with the culture of the Far East. (Well, maybe just Kung Fu movies and Shaolin monks.) It took a few decades, but the Far East may finally be giving back the love. According to a recent article in The New York Times, Chinese youths are starting to pick up the mic and getting Doug E….

Mac Dre and Fat Tone Slayings Explored on BET’s American Gangster

Remember when KC rapper Fat Tone was killed in Las Vegas supposedly in retaliation for the murder of Bay Area rapper Mac Dre? (If not, former-Pitch-staffer-turned-mayoral-chief-of-staff Kendrick Blackwood’s got a helluva story for you.) As promised, BET’s controversial series American Gangster devoted an episode to the murders. The above clip features locals like DJ Kool Wayne, DJ Fresh, my girl…

Killa City: Parents of dead baby were IHOP members

Over the weekend, I read the Kansas City Star story about the parents of Jeremiah Candler, the 4-month-old baby who starved to death in mid-November. The Jackson County Medical Examiner ruled the baby’s death a homicide, and the baby’s parents, Nick and Rebecca Candler (pictured), were charged with their son’s death. But I was struck by the Star’s mention of…

In that spirit, welcome to a weekly guide to leaving the house and engaging in public affairs. Categories: News Tags: Bob Berkebile, tomas young

Tomorrow is free sample day at Panera Bread

On Wednesday, January 28, the 21 Panera Bread stores in the greater Kansas City metro are handing out free cups of the Missouri-based bakery operation’s new coffee blends — a light roast and a dark roast. While the free coffee flows all day, they’ll also give away samples of new grilled breakfast sandwiches and new Strawberry Granola Parfaits in the morning….

Hermisms silenced

The firing of Chiefs coach Herm Edwards brings an end to the most quotable coach in Chiefs history … for all the wrong reasons. Arrowhead Addict breaks down the top 10 “Hermisms.” My favorite: “Hey rook, get me some Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I like ’em hot, hot — hot!” So profound.   Categories: News Tags: Herm Edwards, Hermisms, kansas city…

Funk chooses fight over flight

The tallest mayor in all of “cantankerous” Kansas City, Mark Funkhouser, announced yesterday that he chooses fight over flight. Funkhouser spent half of his State of the City address declaring war on those who dare challenge him. “Now I realize that if you are in a war, you have to fight back,” Funkhouser said. “The attacks — the attempts by…

Bannister Mall: Spooky, Abandoned … Perfect Place for a Techno Video

Our friend Lethal D spent some time this weekend photographing one of the more depressing places in town, shabby old rundown Bannister Mall. The pictures don’t have anything to do with music, except that D is a local musician. Cue up some minimalist German techno or Godspeed You Black Emperor while you look at these photos, and there you go….

Get Up Kids Will Tour in 2009, Says Matt Pryor

Altpress.com just reported “During the Cleveland performance of the Where’s The Band? Tour, the Get Up Kids frontman Matt Pryor revealed that the band are planning to embark on a U.S. tour in the fall.” TGUK’s MySpace lists no tour dates yet — save for a March 13 show at Liberty Hall. We’ll keep you Kidheads posted. Categories: Music Tags:…

New Video (Sorta) from Super Black Market

Ex-Warrensburg punks Super Black Market posted a new video on YouTube. It’s a self-produced, minimalist, black and white treatment of the band performing “The Right Chords,” a song off Super Black’s 2007 album Will Sell Anything. Judging by drummer and lyricist (and editor of this video) Joseph Remlinger’s long hair, the footage appears to be a couple years old. He…
