Parents regret not reporting boy missing … after nine years

Lovely story out of Sedgwick County, Kansas, where a pre-teen boy named Adam Herrman goes missing in 1999 and his adoptive parents patiently wait until just a few weeks ago to report him missing. Spectacular parenting, Doug and Valerie Herrman. But the money quotes come from the Herrman’s attorney, Warner Eisenbise, who said the boy’s parents “really rue the fact…

KC Life sues to obtain former school

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. says it’s been wrongly denied the opportunity to buy a former school near its midtown headquarters. In a lawsuit filed against the Kansas City, Missouri, School District last month, Kansas City Life says it bid $1.425 million for the Norman Center School at 35th and Jefferson only to lose out to a condo developer who…

Download the link below or at Sku’s Postbocks page, where you can also find a tracklist. ZIP: DJ Sku, NASA And he’s even throwing in artwork! (NOTE:…

Killa City: Kansas City’s first homicide of 2009

View Larger Map Rodney Kemp, a 37-year-old black male, is 2009’s first homicide. Police found him last night at 7:30 in front of 7430 College Avenue with “life-threatening injuries” to his upper body. He was transported to a hospital where he later died. According to Case.Net, Kemp lived at 7429 College Avenue, which was listed as his address on record…

Aw Crap: Stooges Guitarist Ron Asheton Dead at 60

The Ann Arbor News reports that Stooges guitarist Ronald Asheton was found dead in his home around 12 a.m. this morning. Police say he’d been dead for days. (Aw man, that’s no way to go!) Cause is unknown, but foul play is not suspected. Categories: Music Tags: deaths, Ron Asheton, Stooges

Cosentino’s Downtown Market arrives in style

Note: Due to electronic shenanigans beyond my knowledge, my camera card decided to encode all my photos of Cosentino’s Market in weird text. If I get the problem worked out today, I’ll post them immediately. I just got back from Cosentino’s Downtown Market and can safely report that it is a very good grocery store. It’s noticeably bigger than the…

Stealing Time: Any Kansas Dems want to be governor?

Does any Democrat want to run for governor? Christian Morgan, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, laughs at the idea that any Kansas Democrat would dare challenge Sam Brownback or Ron Thornburgh. Kansas Jackass answers Morgan and reels off 20 potential candidates and reminds Morgan that the 2010 election is a long way away. Categories: News Tags: Erin in…

Pancakes at the library

As already reported in Pitch Forks, the Kansas City, Missouri Central Library’s Food For Thought series kicks off tonight with a speech by one of the preeminent pancake historians in the world (maybe the only pancake historian in the world), Ken Albala. He’s also a pancake lover — claiming that he hasn’t missed a morning without a pancake for half…

Rachel Maddow will drink you under the table

Oh Rachel Maddow, my crush. First, you get the luxury of going on television every night and smacking around Pat Buchanan. Now you show us how to make a classic cocktail with the best of them, first explaining that applejack is “not so much an apple brandy as it is an apple whiskey” and then coolly noting that “any liquor…

Barack Obama: Food Critic

It’s hard to believe this video is only seven years old, but here he is in 2001, espousing on food and reviewing Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop in Chicago. The most telling part of the video: Ever the politician, he ordered the southern sampler to avoid getting pigeon-holed into a one-entree kind of guy. From community channel guest to president…

The Download: New Bon Iver MP3

Along with dropping one of my favorite remixes of 2008, Justin Vernon earned a spot on plenty of year-end lists with his Bon Iver debut, For Emma, Forever Ago. He returns in a couple of weeks with four new tracks. From the one-sheet: “As much as Emma is about the cold, the Blood Bank collection is about the warmth that…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, 01/06

%{}% I hope this blogger’s keen eye isn’t seeing a sign of things to come. Sometimes you can break bend the law and not only come out on top, but drunker too. Gulfstreams for a song and dance? Not quite, but if you’ve got some spare cash this is the time to pick up a corporate jet for five million…

Photos: People’s Liberation Big Band

Click the photo below for a sexy and impressionistic (you know, like nouvelle vague or something) slide show from yesterday’s People’s Liberation Big Band early-evening show at the Record Bar. We were there for the first set but had to leave early. Read a review of the whole shebang at Plastic Sax. Categories: Music Tags: jazz, People’s Liberation Big Band,…

Stealing Time: You should be reading ArtKC365

I should’ve mentioned this earlier today in Stealing Time, but check out ArtKC365. It’s a cool site run by Steve Brisendine. He’ll feature an artist (or a collective of artists) daily and pimp where you can see the pretty pictures like the one above from Joshua Rizer.  — Justin Kendall Categories: News Tags: ArtKC365

Every $1 helps send an elderly stripper to Slamdance

Getting to the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, ain’t cheap for an indie filmmaker like Jack Truman. So he needs all the help he can get — especially in this economy — to make the trip with his ex-stripper momma, Opal, in a couple of weeks. Yep, Truman made a documentary/mockumentary film, The X-Rated Grandma, about his mother,…

Praise the Lord for these love-making tips

A week ago, we got a press release about this new, local testimonial Web site: Please Put God First.com. A godless heathen like me isn’t going to testify or drop $5 on a P.P.G.F. bracelet — which the site seems more interested in hawking than in getting testimonials (there’s only one). I started snooping around the site and found links…

Shawn Edwards loses crown as whoriest movie critic

Sadly, Shawn Edwards has fallen from the heights of 2007’s Whore of the Year. Criticwatch has named a new whore and it isn’t Fox 4’s hyperbolic man at the movies. It’s some tool named Mark S. Allen. Edwards finished a stunning fourth, placing in the top five for a magnificent sixth consecutive year, with an eye-popping 23 review quotes in…

Club Editor picks for Best Local Songs of 2008

Mmmhmm. 2008 was a fine year for local music. 1) “I Know Nothing’s All Right,” Boo and Boo Too. No Tempo. (Ironpaw Records) 2) “I’d Rather Die,” Olympic Size. You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone. (self-released) 3) “Sirs and Madames,” Hawley Schoffner. Categories: Music Tags: Abracadabras, Big Surrender, Boo and Boo Too, Hawley Schoffner, olympic size, republic tigers, the Architects,…

Upset! Sam Graves isn’t the sleaziest campaigner

Sam Graves, as it turns out, isn’t sleazier than John McCain or Liddy Dole. It’s not for lack of trying — see Graves’ abortion-loving, interracial, San Francisco sodomite wet dream: Graves’ homophobic campaign ads finished third — third?!? — in Talking Points Memo’s Golden Duke Awards. I totally thought Graves had this one; the ads were good enough to win…

Stealing Time: Flame on flamers

Lots of ugliness on the Internets. Ugliest of all is Alonzo Washington’s rant against JoCo SOB and the Marines. Washington basically calls the SOB a pussy for being part of a military unit (Washington needs no back up other than God, “which is more powerful than the Marines”): I’ll let Washington’s eloquence speak for itself: “Without his platoon he is…

Krazy for Kombucha

Over the holidays my uncle came to visit from Los Angles. Within a few minutes of arriving, he handed me what at first glance looked to be a Snapple. But it said Synergy on the label, and the liquid inside was gold-colored had a bunch of flecks floating around in it. “This is going to blow your mind,” he said….

Fat City’s best posts of 2008

Fat City started in July and since then, Charles Ferruzza, myself and company have written nearly 500 posts about various comings, goings, odd items and leftovers — as we affectionately call the stuff we have no idea how to categorize — dealing with Kansas City and food. Here are ten of my favorite Fat City posts from 2008: Categories: Dining,…
