Letters from the week of January 8

Letters: “A Google Expert,” December 2, 2008 History Repeats I missed Joshua Lawson’s original letter. I have no intention of responding to any letter he may write about this one, but in his latest talking about the economic crisis, he wrote, “Eerie, we seem to be in the same situation less than a century later.” Since earlier in his letter…

Shawn Edwards defends Ben Lyons

Fox 4 movie critic Shawn Edwards gets called a quote whore for his bombastic proclamations that end up on movie posters. So he can sympathize with his friend and fellow critic Ben Lyons, who now co-hosts “At the Movies,” giving his reviews from balcony seats once reserved for Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. The Los Angeles Times recently wondered if…

Morrison’s mistress testifies

Day two of Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller’s pretrial hearing finds mistress/Wonder Woman Linda Carter back on the stand and closing arguments. Wichita Eagle reporter Ron Sylvester once again Tweeted the hearing. My favorite part so far: Judge Clark Owens’ ruling that ex-Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline can keep the lock on his personal diary. Categories: News Tags: Linda Carter,…

That’s a lot of child porn

Richard McNett had a lot of child porn. A lot. The Lawrence Journal-World reports: Investigators found 1,202 child pornography images on disks, 7,740 images on McNett’s hard drive and 13,990 images on 11 compact discs, Cross said. I don’t know anything about child porn busts, but that sounds like a shitload of child porn to me. The 51-year-old was sentenced…

Killa City: Weed deal leads to shooting

“Bubba shot me,” Rodney Kemp told a witness who rushed to help him as he lay bleeding near College Avenue on January 5. Later, Kemp told police, “Bubba set me up.” Jackson County prosecutors believe that “Bubba” is 25-year-old Hollis Burgin (pictured at right). Prosecutors charged Burgin with second-degree murder and armed criminal action today. Kemp told police that “Bubba”…

Killa City: Official body count at three

Add two more to the death toll. Like Crime Scene KC, we thought Rodney Kemp was Kansas City’s first homicide of 2009. Turns out there were two before him. Categories: News Tags: Freddy Medina, homicides, Jeremiah Candler, Killa City, Rodney Kemp

The Great Derangement: We’re in it

One of our favorite writers is Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi, whose 2008 book The Great Derangement: A Terrifying True Story of War, Politics & Religion at the Twilight of the American Empire, is due out in paperback next week. The book’s subtitle doesn’t lie — Taibbi leads a truly terrifying expedition through Congress, the 9/11 Truth movement and the sad God…

Ssion in Vice Magazine: sex, drugs and gay rockers

Photo courtesy myspace.com/ssion What happens when Ssion goes on tour? All the old rock ‘n’ roll cliches, except gayer! The band is keeping a tour blog for Vice Magazine, including lots of candid photos and frontman Cody Critcheloe’s naughty commentary.  You can tell it’s going to be a wild ride from the very first post: “I’m really thankful that two core…

Stealing Time: Where can I buy a rifle on the street?

I’m just as amazed as the JoCo SOB at nonchalance of this line from this story about an apparent accidental shooting/homicide: “Freddy had bought a rifle off the street earlier and the friends began posing with the gun for cell phone photos.” Naturally. Teens drink in bedroom. One loses grip on gun. Gun fires. Boy gets shot in head. Boy…

Local bartenders in the national news

The Chicago Sun-Times has an article this week about dealing with winter weather the old fashioned way: drinking yourself warm. There’s the usual mentions and recipes from bartenders in New York and (of course) Chicago, but then author Seanan Forbes mentions not one, not two, but three bartenders from Kansas City. The first is Ryan Maybee: “Contrast might be the…

KC’s wish list for Obama’s stimulus

After spending part of his holiday in swimming trunks, president-elect Buff Bam arrived in D.C. this week and dug into the difficult task of salvaging the economy. In recent weeks, he’s outlined his vision for a stimulus package that would put federal dollars into shovel-ready infrastructure projects. This week his aides hinted that the tab for Obama’s plan could reach …

Kansas City! Party of five. Your adventure ended.

The first time I went to Rain Forest Cafe I was 10 and it was at the Mall of America in Minnesota. The Rain Forest Cafe there looked remarkably similar to the Rain Forest Cafe that closed in the Oak Park Mall on Monday. I remember thinking, “Man, this place is cheesy” and this was from a 10-year-old. The best…

The Download: My Morning Jacket Live NYE MP3s

Jim James and Co. are regarded as one of the best live acts out there for a reason, so unless you were at Madison Square Garden last Wednesday (or stuck at home watching bits and pieces from CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage,) you missed a doozy of a show. Included in the setlist were the following covers (which are available…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, 01/07

%{}% It has taken scientists until 2009 and bees to tell you what any junior bartender could: cocaine makes you energetic and annoying while alcohol makes you frisky. The numbers have been tallied and it’s official: the U.S. stock market suffered its second worse year since…(drum-roll please) 1825! Back then, the president was John Quincy Adams and the market crashed…

Meet Devyn Simone of MTV’s “Real World: Brooklyn”

Devyn Simone is a Kansas City native, a graduate of Notre Dame de Sion High School, and a former host of KPRS 103.3’s popular morning show Generation Rap. Now she’s part of the cast of MTV’s The Real World: Brooklyn, which premieres tonight (she’s third from the right). Check out our Q and A after the jump. Categories: News Tags:…

Happy trails, Carl Peterson

Carl Peterson approached the podium for his 40-minute farewell address wearing his customary tan and double-breasted suit coat, a red handkerchief peeking out from the pocket. Peterson delivered his remarks on Tuesday in the Chiefs practice facility, which smells like a tire factory on account of the rubber in the synthetic turf. The setting — a building large enough to…

The Twitter trial of Phill Kline

%{}% I didn’t make it to Wichita today — commitments kept me here at headquarters (sorry, Brian). So I’ve had to follow Wichita Eagle reporter/Tweeter Ron Sylvester’s coverage. Sylvester didn’t disappoint last time, and he’s giving up the juicy info as it happens this time, too. About a half hour ago, Phill Kline finally left the stand after testifying all…

Kansas Liberty still only source widely circulating school funding claim

Mary Pilcher-Cook’s “fair and factual” news source, Kansas Liberty, continues to be the only source in Kansas pushing the idea that the state’s budget woes were caused by an increase in school funding. “The hike in education funding is widely cited as a growing problem as Kansas seeks to weather an unprecedented financial crisis,” Kansas Liberty’s Holly Smith wrote. Once…

Missouri Matters: Missouri politics’ Facebook

Forget Facebook and MySpace, Missouri political junkies. Scooter Jackson, the man behind the not-at-all-Republican Missouri Political News Service, has started a social networking site for Missouri politicos called Missouri Matters. So far, 163 people have signed up. Hey, who wouldn’t want to be friends with Matt Blunt’s former chief-of-staff Ed Martin (pictured)? Except for maybe, Scott Eckersley. But at least…

Former superintendent running same plays with more support

During his short tenure as superintendent of Kansas City’s Public Schools, Anthony Amato earned his share of detractors. Since he wasn’t around long enough to develop ideas, it wasn’t clear if the programs he implemented would have long-term results or if they were prepackaged methods designed to provide a quick academic bump that would wear off within a year or…

Chase Daniel eats his boogers

Hey, kids, keep your boogers off the training table. And Chase, save some for dinner. — Justin Kendall Categories: News Tags: boogers, Chase Daniel, Missouri Tigers

Funkhouser: Ready for your questions

In a week, Mayor Mark Funkhouser, the Jay Leno of Kansas City mayors, will tape the next episode of “Straight Talk with the Mayor.” It’s unconfirmed whether Gloria Squitiro, the Kevin Eubanks of mayor’s wives, will be along to add her too-hot-for-the-29th-floor comedy schtick. Crispin Rea invites you to send your questions or comments to crispin_rea@kcmo.org by next Monday. I’m…
