A holiday drunk story from the mall

%{}% My sister, who lives out of town, visited for the Thanksgiving holiday. She’s a journalist, too, so I trust her reporting. I have, however, changed some of the details in the following story to protect the drunk. While she’s waiting for me to get off work, my sis goes to a mall to do some Christmas shopping. She stops…

Santa to confound dogs, delight humans

Dogs have difficulty distinguishing the color red from green, which makes Christmas a little confusing. Nonetheless, Santa Claus will visit the Penn Valley Dog Park on Sunday, December 14. Dog owners who squeal with delight when their animals do toddler-ish things should arrive at the park between 10:30 and noon, when Santa (or Green Giant Shih Tzu-Looking Guy, as he’s…

Gay softballers donate their namesake to kids in need

After just two years in the Heart of America Softball League, The Barbies went all the way to the Gay World Series this past summer. After raising $10,000 from fans and sponsors, the Barbies traveled to Seattle and went 5-2 at the national competition. It wasn’t enough to make it to the winners’ podium, but these players did bring home…

Mayor Funkhouser issues statement on settlement of lawsuit

The mayor’s office just released this statement regarding Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s decision to settle his part of the lawsuit filed against him by former office worker Ruth Bates. Funkhouser uses the release to reiterate that he and his wife were the real victims — he says it all stems from an “abuse of a friendship.” The statement follows: FOR IMMEDIATE…

Daily Briefs: Funkhouser; Econocalypse; Brownback

%{}% Dumb-bunny civic embarrassment Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s proposal to settle Ruth Bates’ lawsuit against him was rejected by the City Council, 2-10. Funkhouser wants to settle because he can TOTALLY WIN THIS THING in court. He was asking for $135,000 to pay off the legal tab incurred by wife Gloria Squitiro’s fat, stupid mouth, plus another $40,000 for his attorney….

Happy Repeal Day!

December 5 isn’t widely celebrated as a landmark date in our nation’s history, but d-d-d-ammit it sh-sh-should be (sorry, got the sh-shakes). Because on this day in 1933, the 21st Amendment was ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and ending Prohibition. Happy Repeal Day, Kansas City! Go ahead, celebrate with a drink on me at Plaza III. Ask for Smitty. Have’m…

Eat breakfast with Santa, Tyrannosaurus Rex. What could go wrong?

“Breakfast with Santa at T-REX CAFE” brings up so many thoughts of One Million Years B.C. and inappropriately violent scenarios. Sadly though, the actual event seems more mundane, without the whole carnivorous-dinosaurs-chasing-fat-guy-in-red-suit angle. It’s more along the lines of breakfast buffet (where do I know those words from?) for kids of all ages and a chance to be greeted by…

Nothing whets the appetite like fish balls

If fish balls aren’t your thing try fluffy mackerel pudding or cabbage casserole czarina. Just three of the many dishes featured on Weight Watchers recipe cards from 1974. I lost my appetite just looking at these cards, and pretty soon the pounds will be coming off like the blood-and-milk looking sauce comes off the roast chicken. Back when Weight Watchers…

%{}% If you’re a fan of all types of tea or a fan of competitive head-to-head match-ups or just a fan of awww-isn’t-that-cute packaging, then you should click over to the Celestial Tea showdowns that Hot Blog on a Stick has been running all week. If you’ve ever wanted to digitally yell at someone who’s making a salad, then do…

Decision in Planned Parenthood-Phill Kline medical records case tomorrow

The Kansas Supreme Court will decide tomorrow morning whether it will force Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline to return medical records to Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri. Planned Parenthood sued Kline after he accused the clinic of breaking Kansas law by performing illegal abortions and forging documents. Planned Parenthood wanted back medical records subpoenaed by Kline. We’ve been…

“Body of War” vet to speak after months in recovery

With Phil Donahue talking up his film Body of War on national television and the Sundance Channel debuting the stark documentary on the small screen last month, a growing audience has witnessed the shattered life of Tomas Young. But the Northland native who allowed the camera into his most intimate moments for the hard-hitting movie hasn’t been seen for months. …
