Blazers beat Hawks at the Sprint Center

By JUSTIN KENDALL Click on Greg Oden’s beard to see a slideshow. The up-and-coming Portland Trail Blazers, led by man-beast Greg Oden, faced a young Atlanta Hawks team Friday night in the Sprint Center’s first NBA game. Before the game, the PA announcer issued an odd warning: In case of a tornado, stay away from glass windows. Uh, the entire…

The last night of Il Trullo — for now

By CHARLES FERRUZZA Saturday night was jumping, to put it mildly, at Il Trullo, the cozy Italian restaurant at 9056 Metcalf in Overland Park. At 8 p.m., every table was occupied and there was still a wait for customers who had either made a late reservation or just walked in and wanted to get one last bowl of gnocchi with…

By ANDY VIHSTADT Photo by Mark Van S. Last week, John Darnielle and Peter Hughes, aka the Mountain Goats, made their tour-only Satanic Messiah EP available to the general public. According to Darnielle on the band’s site: The songs will also be available as a limited edition double-7″ in a gatefold hi-gloss sleeve, etc., but when I say “limited,” I…

Concert Review: A Place to Bury Strangers with Sian Alice Group and Roman Numerals at the Record Bar, 10-10-08.

A Place to Bury Strangers Friday, October 10, 2008 The Record Bar Better Than: Complete eardrum blowout. By BERRY ANDERSON On Friday, I heeded the call of the Wayward Son and agreed to provide my unadulterated opinion on a performance by Brooklyn’s A Place to Bury Strangers. Little did I know, that night would provoke the beginning of my quickly…

A dispatch from the Weston Irish Fest

By OWEN MORRIS I attended the Weston Irish Fest on Saturday and apart from leaving my camera at home (hence, this post’s generic picture) had a pleasant time. The city of Weston is basically a college town without a college. Lots of nice old buildings and independent shops, but without that antiques “hands-off!” feel of other nice old towns. Like…

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, 10/13

%{}% By OWEN MORRIS The writer of KC Lunch Spots just made his job tougher. He’s now on the prowl for great healthy lunch spots! (KC Lunch Spots) If now is a time when people are looking for deals, let me be clear that the best wine deals are wines from South America. Fortunately, Forbes puts together a great list…

By JUSTIN KENDALL Last week, William R. Watkins, an Independence barber and Beetlejuice imitator, pleaded guilty to molesting 13 underage girls. A judge sentenced him to 30 years in prison. Watkins worked at haunted houses in the 1990s and was known for dressing up as Beetlejuice and as The Grinch. Categories: News Tags: Beetlejuice, Child Molestor, The Grinch, William R….

Concert Review: Randy Newman, October 11, at the Folly Theater

Randy Newman October 11 The Folly, Kansas City By JASON HARPER The churning of phlegm, the soft rhythmic padding of orthopedic shoes, the moist thock of ice cubes in a plastic cup of whiskey, a woman repeating to her husband what the man on stage just said. Hoarse laughter. Whiffs of wafting flatulence. The youngest person at Saturday night’s Randy…

Lakers 122, Kings 116

By DAVID MARTIN The National Basketball Association returns to Kansas City tonight at 7 p.m., when Portland and Atlanta play an exhibition game at the Sprint Center. Kansas City lost its NBA franchise in 1985. The league allowed the Kings to move to Sacramento after a 31-51 season, a year KC finished last in the league in attendance. The box…

A bittersweet end to Cassis

By CHARLES FERRUZZA Two years ago, The Pitch named Cassis, chef Patrick Quillec’s bistro in Leawood’s Town Center Plaza, the Best New Restaurant in Kansas City. This week the restaurant’s phone service was disconnected. Quillec has reportedly left town (he didn’t return messages left on his cell phone). Quillec, who has opened a number of restaurants in the metro area…

%{}% Before you roll your eyes, realize (ooh, that rhymed) that ZZ TOP 5 comprises the same dudes (minus one) from the mighty LED ZEPPELIN V: Jeff Harshbarger, Billy Brimblecom and Brodie Rush. That’s some mighty firepower for your $2. Note that this Sunday kicks off an every-second-Sunday tribute series at McCoy’s. Categories: Music Tags: cover songs, Sundays

Weston goes Irish

By OWEN MORRIS In the Pitch Forks newsletter early this week I hinted at it but I’ll come out right here and say it: Weston’s Irish Fest is the best event in Kansas City. Bar none. It’s the only one that combines authenticity, alcohol, good music and a sense of adventure into one package. I’m not the only one who…

Dead Girls Ruin Everything: New Album, Free Song, and New Name

2008 Pitch Music Awards Best Pop winners Dead Girls Ruin Everything are now calling themselves just The Dead Girls. While our semioticians parse the significance of this name change, enjoy this sharp, crisp and catchy free track — like a piping hot Frito fresh off the factory line — from the group’s upcoming album, Out of Earshot. MP3: Whoa, that’s…

Restaurants 2.0

By OWEN MORRIS Yesterday I posted an article about fast-food chili. While researching the article, I wanted to call Steak n’ Shake and ask them a few questions about the history of the chili. To find a Steak n’ Shake phone number I visited its Web site — and was more than a little surprised to see just how plain…
