There’s a new tenant at 3927 Broadway and, for the first time in four years, it’s not a Middle Eastern restaurant — though the place has multicultural leanings. The month-old Wing’s Café has traditional Buffalo-style wings, of course, but among the dozen or so choices of saucy or dry-rub-seasoned wings, you can also order smoked Sriracha and Shanghai bourbon varieties.
The three-year-old Northland location of Wings Café — which received The Pitch’s “Best Chicken Wings” honors in 2014 — recently took over the midtown space formerly occupied by the Olive Café and Little Egypt. Wings owes its following to rave-worthy sauces and rubs, particularly spicier stuff like the “Slap Yo’ Mama” rub (deliciously hot but not too aggressive). There’s also the peppery-sweet Durango, the golden barbecue and the kick-ass Voodoo.
Like the original Wings (516 Northwest Englewood Road), the new one is spartan, in terms of décor, but impeccably clean and friendly. And, as at the Northland restaurant, there’s more to the menu than fried wings. Fried fish, shrimp and combo platters are available, along with a couple of dessert options — the chocolate brownies are baked in-house. For now, only soft drinks can cool your wings fire, but the owners have applied for a liquor license. There’s a good-size dining room in the Broadway restaurant, but business has been heavy on carryout, employees tell me, especially when the lunch special is in effect. (From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday, six wings, one side dish and a soft drink go for $9.91, tax included.)
Side dishes include hush puppies, fries, fresh celery and carrot sticks, baked beans, cole slaw, and pepper poppers. For an upcharge, you can also get macaroni and cheese, fried mozzarella sticks or fried corn nuggets.
Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
