Why don’t we add ‘born on’ dates to produce?

I’m pretty good about picking ripe produce — I ran a fresh fruit and produce pick-up service in college. But you shouldn’t have to be in the industry to figure out whether a peach is going to be good.

Slashfood recently wrote about how the Fresh & Easy Neighborhood market chain is expanding its “Farm to Store in 24” pilot program, which guarantees that produce will be picked and on store shelves in less than a day. Why don’t we take that concept a little further and start slapping “born on” dates to produce?
