Who’s making the cake for your party?

There comes a point in every man’s life when he realizes that he may be too old to make his first cake. Just like learning a new language, sometimes you have to take a long look at your reflection in the oven and admit that laziness is trumping enthusiasm.

In the past year, I’ve purchased cakes everywhere from Andre’s (a delicate chocolate ganache) to Costco (a sheet cake that proclaimed on the label it was filled with “two pounds of white mousse”). Both were crowd-pleasers and meant that I wouldn’t be burning anything. But as long as I’m not making them, that means I’m still searching for the best cake in town. Who’s got it?
