Torre’s Pizza relaunched as Downtown Pizza

When the Dark Horse Tavern closed up a couple of weeks ago, it also meant the end of Torre’s Pizza – the polarizing pie shop that operated out of the bar’s kitchen. (We spoke highly of the joint in our epic pizza issue in March.) Fear not, Torre’s devotees. You can still get the exact same menu (and even call the same number to order: 816-931-3663), just under a new name.
Owner Andy Skeen has rebranded his pizza operation as Downtown Pizza and moved into the kitchen at downtown gay bar Social (1118 McGee). “They [Social’s owners] were real good customers of mine when I ran Torre’s,” Skeen says. “So they offered me the space.”
Downtown Pizza has been slinging pizza for two weeks, and Skeen says business has been solid, largely due to being the only downtown place delivering until 4 a.m. Like at the Dark Horse, you can stick around and eat the pizza in the bar.
“We do have a seating area, but basically, I wouldn’t call it a family-warm environment,” Skeen says. “It’s more of a mature atmosphere. If you are feeding your family, takeout delivery is the best option at this point.”
But Skeen hopes to have a more family atmosphere soon at a second location. “I do plan to expand my locations,” he says. “If everything takes off again like it’s supposed to, then I’m going to have no problem starting a second location.”
