The unholy offspring of a grilled cheese and a hamburger

It was bound to happen. The Chubby Melt has gone corporate. Friendly’s (an ice cream chain on the East Coast that’s comparable to Steak n’ Shake) has co-opted the specialty sandwich — a hamburger stuffed between two grilled cheese sandwiches — as part of its new line of Big Beef Burgers. The aptly named Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt is described on Friendly’s website as:

A Big Beef burger between two hot grilled cheese sandwiches, with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Tasting is believing.

The jaw-altering burger clocks in at 1,500 calories with 79 grams of fat. It’s literally three meals in one. Perhaps inspired by the stuffed-crust pizza of old, the burger keeps the cheese on the perimeter via four slices of toast.

I understand that in the face of all that is good and natural, I shouldn’t want this burger. Yet I still can’t help but think how I’d make my own version (the closest Friendly’s is in Ohio) — and how good it would taste with slab bacon.
