The Pitch‘s Margarita Wars mixes up cool cocktails and food on Friday

The magic of the Margarita cocktail, they say, is in the tequila. The beverage, a combination of tequila, triple sec, and fresh lemon or lime juice, has become one of the best-selling mixed drinks in America over the last half-century for both its potency and its kaleidoscope of tastes: sweet, salty, tart, citrusy and cold.

This Friday, August 7, fans of the classic cocktail will gather in the parking lot behind the Well at 7421 Broadway in Waldo. The event gives patrons the opportunity to taste — and vote on — 10 different Margarita samples created by 10 local restaurants with cocktail vending credentials: Blind Tiger, Chuy’s, Kmacho’s Mexican Restaurant, the Well, Unforked, Salty Iguana (last year’s Margarita Wars winner), El Patrón — which was voted “Best Margarita” in last year’s “Best of Kansas City” issue — and On the Border, Hotel Phillips and Drunken Worm.

Five local food operations will also be offering culinary samples throughout the event, including Unforked, the Blue Bird Bistro, 12 Baltimore at the Hotel Phillips, Grace’s Best Cookies, and Hungry Monkey Party Bites.

A favorite vendor at Pitch events, Hungry Monkey Party Bites, will be sharing samples of its top-selling popcorn flavors: garlic cheese and onion, all-natural garlic bread, jazzy KC-style barbecue, and wedding cake. Another local sweet, the sunflower-laden Grace’s Best Cookies, will also be on hand.

Keeping everyone’s sweet tooth satisfied, 12 Baltimore at the Hotel Phillips will be serving a traditional creme caramel in a chocolate tulip cup, garnished with slices of tequila-marinated fire-grilled apple.

Unforked restaurant, which is also a competitor in the Margarita samplings, will be serving its popular Barking Pig tacos.

The event — presented by Olmeca Altos and sponsored by Dos Equis Dos a Rita — begins at 6 p.m. Ticket information is available here.
