The June Closed Restaurant List

When Scott Lin opened his stylish Asian restaurant Mandarinism at 4800 West 135th Street last year, he seemed to be doing everything right. But then, according to servers who work in restaurants in the same neighborhood, everything went wrong. “The food quality slipped and the service got really sloppy,” a Leawood waiter confided to me. “I think people just stopped going.”
Well, something happened, because Mandarinism is now closed: the phone is disconnected and it was shuttered on a Saturday night. This restaurant’s closing will be a boon for the newly opened Tannah’s (5041 W. 135th Street) across the street. Tannah’s has good service and “Asian gourmet with an American Twist” — their words, not mine — that’s actually very good.
And the fortune cookie finally crumbled for the 23-year-old Chili’s in Westport, for the Brazilian-influenced Azul Latin Bistro at 1108 Grand and the Majestic Steakhouse at 931 Broadway. People either loved or hated the Majestic Steakhouse, but few local restaurants captured the feel of a 19th-century chophouse like it did.
