Overland Park is getting a new grocery-store chain. The Fresh Market (6261 West 135th Street) opens in the Prairiefire at Lionsgate development at 8 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, with chef demonstrations, drawings for gift cards, and a reusable shopping bag for the first 1,000 customers. This is a massive grocery store, spanning 24,300 square feet, that will stock more than 400 kinds of produce, 200 kinds of cheese and an in-house bakery making 30 breads daily.

“The Fresh Market’s inviting atmosphere is reminiscent of European markets,” CEO Craig Carlock said in a release announcing the store opening. “The smell of freshly brewed coffee and bread right out of the oven, the sound of classical music, soft lighting with antique decor in an intimate setting, and the ability to select and taste fresh, high quality products all work together to create surroundings where customers are encouraged to experience the food.”

Seafood will be delivered several times a week, and the Overland Park store will also have a deli, butcher, house coffee and a host of prepared meals. The Fresh Market has 138 stores in 26 states. The first store opened in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1982. It’s a publicly traded company that one Yelper suggested is the “Southern answer to Whole Foods.”

Anyone been to the Fresh Market in another state and care to weigh in on the shopping experience?
