Tex-Mex chain Chuy’s is now open on the Plaza
As of 11 a.m. today, Chuy’s – an Austin-based Tex-Mex chain that’s rapidly expanding across the country – is open for business, in the old Figlio space on the Country Club Plaza.
We stopped by last night to check out the menu and the redesign.
And what a redesign it is: It’s definitely a sensory-overload situation inside. There are design-themed rooms, like the one above, and the wall near the entrance, which is lined with vintage cameras. In the middle of the restaurant (there are many rooms in this space), employees are perpetually tossing tortillas onto a spinning flat-top. There’s also some Elvis worship going on, including a shrine to the King near the front; one menu item is called the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken; and a combination dish is called the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo, which includes a beef enchilada, a cheese Ranchero enchilada, a chicken Tomatillo enchilada, a seasoned ground sirloin crispy taco and homemade tostada chips dipped in chile con queso.
It’s a family-friendly joint, with big portions. Cheap, too: The Texas Martini Margarita (pictured) was reasonably priced, and that heart-attack Elvis combo is only $10.95.
