‘Swanky, hip boutique bakery’ opens in Leavenworth

Kelly Littmann may be the tiniest, skinniest restaurateur in the metro. It was hard for me to believe she bakes some of the desserts that she prepares for her six-month-old bistro, the Peacock Cafe, in downtown Leavenworth, let alone eats any of them.

Littmann says her secret for staying svelte is raising horses: She and her husband own a farm in Platte City. “I muck my own stalls,” Littmann says. “I bale my own hay.”

She also grows berries, herbs and vegetables that she brings to the kitchen of her self-proclaimed “swanky little hip boutique bakery” at 109 North Fifth Street. Swanky? I’d say quaint might be a better word. Hip? I suppose that would be in the eye of the beholder, but last Saturday, the dining room was filled with neighborhood women taking a craft class, learning to make decorative banners and “cupcake toppers.” If that’s hip, I guess the Peacock Cafe is totally it.
