Ryan Maybee named Imbibe’s 2013 Bartender of the Year

Ryan Maybee has had a very good year. The Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange – the restaurant above his speakeasy Manifesto – recently held its second anniversary. The Kill Devil Club, the rum-centric jazz club that he had a large hand in, is open in the Power & Light District. And Manifesto was one of a handful of bars from around the country to be invited to compete in the Bar Room Brawl at the Tales of the Cocktail Festival in New Orleans. The cocktail his team prepared there, the Unbridled Julep, was named one of Yahoo’s coolest new cocktails this summer. Maybee was also flown out to Trinidad in February to represent North America in the 2012 Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge.

And now Imbibe has named him its 2013 Bartender of the Year. They’ve also printed his recipe for the Pendergast, a bourbon and sweet vermouth cocktail that is indeed praiseworthy. And the buzz out of the Crossroads is that 2013 could be just as big a year for Maybee and the Rieger – they’re rumored to be working on bringing back the whiskey that once shared the hotel and restaurant’s name.
