Restaurateur Joe Zwillenberg buys Brookside Berbiglia building

  • There’s a new life in the future for this Brookside building

A Fat City reader alerted us that the current restaurant rumor in Brookside is that restaurateur Joe Zwillenberg (Westport Flea Market, Joe Joe’s Catering) had purchased the building at 21 West 63rd Street, built in the 1920s as a supermarket but serving as the Brookside location of Berbiglia’s Wine & Spirits for many years. “And he’s going to open a Jimmy John’s in the space,” wrote the reader.

A phone call to Zwillenberg confirmed the rumor that the young entrepreneur had, indeed, purchased 21 West 63rd Street, and he had plans to subdivide the building (and Berbiglia will remain one of the tenants but in a smaller space), but as for Jimmy Johns? “We’re in discussions with several potential tenants,” Zwillenberg says, “but we have no signed leases with anyone yet. We’re still accepting proposals, however.”

A sandwich shop like Jimmy Johns would be an interesting tenant since the neighborhood already has a Panera Bread location and a Goodcents Subs & Pastas.
