Now open: Nu Nu’s Cafe

Nu Nu? It’s an affectionate term for grandmother, according to Karen “Nu Nu” Harris, who is running the tiny one-month-old Nu Nu’s Cafe in Edwardsville, Kansas, with her partner, Glenda Groves. Harris is the cook, and Groves runs the front of the house, sometimes with the help of her husband, the Rev. Hayden Groves.
The name Groves is an important one in these parts. Hayden Groves is the great-great-grandson of the legendary Junius Groves (1859-1925), known as America’s “Potato King” at the turn of the last century: Groves was one of the wealthiest African-American entrepreneurs of the early 20th century.
