Not all taverns serve food, but here’s a few that do


The third edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language describes a tavern this way:

tavern (tav`ern) n. 1. An establishment licensed to sell alcoholic beverages on the premises.

That’s true in the case of the new Tavern in the Village — this week’s Cafe review — although food sales are just as important here as booze. And no one is ever going to compare the snootier Tavern in the Village with the more laid-back taverns in town, such as Damian King’s Tower Tavern on 31st Street or the iconic Twin City Tavern in Westport.
