Niecie’s Boss Bacon Burger will be Burger Week special

For the last six years, restaurateur Denise Hayes has been serving the best traditional soul food — including tender oxtails, crispy fried chicken and slow-simmered greens — at her namesake restaurant, Niecie’s, at 6441 Troost.

But the staff here also puts out one hell of a hamburger that can be ordered with fries or, for a slight upcharge, one of this restaurant’s side dishes.

During this year’s Burger Week event, sponsored by The Pitch, 16 restaurants will be offering $5 burgers — day and night — October 19-25. This is the first year that Niecie’s has participated in the annual seven-day patty party. The restaurant has created a special burger for Burger Week: the Boss Bacon Burger. I’ve tasted it in advance and it’s as soulfully delicious as the grilled chicken wings, the smothered chicken or the sweet-potato pie.

For a five-spot, Burger Week patrons will get a grilled quarter-pound beef patty (that also contains sausage and bacon) and several slices of extremely crispy fried bacon, topped with a sweet and tangy sauce, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato.

Other Niecie’s news is that the Raytown restaurant of the same name — the venue at 8686 East 63rd Street — is, according to one employee, “slowly closing.” Both the days and the hours of this location have been trimmed back. That location (which is not participating in Burger Week) is now open only Wednesday through Sunday. Weekday hours are now from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Raytown restaurant now closes at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
