My Big Fat Greek Festival

Another weekend means another festival! Last weekend it was the Irish; this time it’s the Greeks.

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church’s 47th Annual Greek Festival starts this Friday at 6 p.m. at 12001 Wornall Road. While homemade galaktoboureko (it’s like a Greek mixture of creme brulee and a cinnamon roll) should be enough to entice any food lover, the fact that the event is free (the event, not the galaktoboureko) is also helpful. Let me repeat: Free to park. Free to enter. Free to try to dance the Hassapiko with professionals.

The hours on Saturday are noon-9 p.m. and Sunday noon-6 p.m. In addition to a megalos selection of Greek desserts (and Greek desserts are some of the best in the world in my humble opinion) and traditional Greek entrees, a Greek market promises a wide array of olives and tzatziki sauce in take-home containers.

Sorry partiers, this is a no-alcohol event so take the children but leave the coozies at home.

After missing out on the haggis at the Irish Fest, I’m hoping to get my yearly fill of lamb guts with kokoretsi, a souvlaki-shaped dish made of stomach and intestine. Yum. Or as the Greeks might say evgefstos.
