Two new cafes opened in Johnson County this week, both offering a new brand of local roast: Mother Earth Coffee. Both are located in Shawnee Mission Medical Center facilities: one off the main entrance of Shawnee Mission Medical Center (9100 West 74th Street, Merriam) and the other, which opened yesterday, inside Prairie Star (23401 Prairie Star Parkway, Lenexa).

Both hospitals are owned by Florida-based Adventist Health System and operated by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church (which has had, historically, a rather dim view of caffeinated beverages). The tiny cafe in the Merriam facility was formerly run as a Scooter’s coffeehouse.

Mother Earth Coffee is owned by Kansas City-based Paris Brothers Specialty Foods, which also roasts and sells its own Parisi Artisan Coffee and has two local coffee venues (at Union Station and at Park Place in Leawood). Pastry chef Nicolette Foster makes baked goods for all four of the cafes.

“Parisi Coffee,” a barista at the Merriam cafe told me today, “is our sister coffee company. They produce gourmet coffee. Mother Earth is a direct-trade, organic coffee and more ecologically responsible. Only natural ingredients are used in the growing and production of our coffee crops.”

The pastry assortment at the Mother Earth shop in Merriam (where physicians seem to be the primary customers) is pretty basic: a moist, crumb-topped individual coffee cake, three kinds of croissants, a dry cinnamon roll, cookies and muffins.

Mother Earth Coffee is roasting five different blends: organic medium roast, organic breakfast blend, organic dark roast, organic decaffeinated, and organic espresso. Bags of these coffee blends will soon be available at local and regional Costco stores as well as at Cosentino’s Brookside Market and some Price Chopper and Hy-Vee stores.

The Mother Earth cafe inside Shawnee Mission Medical Center serves hot drinks, cold beverages, smoothies and sodas from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
