McAlister’s, Schlotzky’s deli chains say Kansas City’s underserved
Kansas City is a lot of things — a deli town is not one of them. There are few things I miss from Brooklyn, but lean corned beef and pastrami are right at the top.
Now, while the news from McAlister’s Deli and Schlotzsky’s won’t solve my immediate problem of finding cured beef, it might go a little way towards changing the deli culture here in in the city.
The Kansas City Business Journal reported yesterday that a new McAlister’s Deli location (it opened Monday at the Summit Fair Shopping Center in Lee’s Summit) is the first of 10 area locations that will be opened by franchisee Bothwell-Saxton Restaurants. The developer intends to build those restaurants in the St. Joseph and Kansas City market over the next five years, with “the bulk of the stores in the Kansas City area.”
