March of the beers: What to drink around town this week

Several new ales and IPAs are available in the area, each of which is vying for space in your cooler. Fat City talked to a staffer at Royal Liquors (103rd and State Line) for some advice on what to grab. You’ll find the beers discussed below on the back right of the u-shaped check-out counter.

At the top of the list was the new Rye-on-Rye Smokestack Series from Boulevard Brewery — he’s not a rye beer guy and he called this one a “can’t miss.” He also pointed to Southern Tier’s Gemini, a blend of the that brewery’s Hoppe and Unearthly IPA.

There are also two new beers — at least as far as the Kansas City market — from the Lagunitas Brewing Company in California: Hairy Eyeball Ale and Wilco Tango Foxtrot (a “malty robust jobless recovery ale”) that the KC Beer Blog gave a whirl on Saturday.

In addition to its traditional Irish Cream Ale, the Weston Brewing Company has two new bottled beers. The Cathedral Square Belgian Ale comes in six packs and the Weston Brew Labs No. 1 India Pale Ale is a 22-oz. This is the first offering that evolved from the practice of session beers being served at the Missouri brewery. The Brew Labs bottles will have higher alcohol content and differ from Weston’s standard and seasonal beers, and the brewery is taking suggestions for what it should release next. Show-Me Beer poured a bottle last week and tasted the malt but not the hops.
