Earlier this month, McDonald’s began serving a limited all-day breakfast menu at most of its fast-food restaurants in the United States. It was the most-requested customer change for the corporation and was met, by most reports, with high enthusiasm.

It wasn’t long before local restaurateurs got into the act.  Everyone loves breakfast — anytime — right?

A few days later — on October 9 — Delereece and Atif Abdel-Khaliq, the owners of the Lutfi’s Fried Fish restaurant at 3037 Main decided to add a breakfast menu to their already expanded selection of lunch and dinner dishes; the Abdel-Khaliqs purchased the franchise for this three-year-old  location from founder Lutfi Khalifa in 2012, not long after he opened the venue. It was Delereece Abdel-Khaliq’s idea to add breakfast to the restaurant’s repertoire of fried fish dishes, burgers, and home-style dinners.

“We’re trying to grow our business,” she says. “There weren’t any unique breakfast opportunities in this neighborhood, if you don’t count fast-food franchises. We’re making everything from scratch.”

The current breakfast menu features a fish omelet made with grilled basa, steamed spinach, fresh garlic and roasted tomatoes and a four-cheese omelet made with white cheddar, pepper jack, Monterey jack and American cheeses. The omelets are served with toast and home-style potatoes and range in price from $7.99 to $8.25.

The breakfast menu also includes pancakes, chicken and waffles, halal sausage, turkey sausage, cheesy grits, and hot oatmeal.

“The response has been good,” Dellereece Abdel-Khaliq says, “although we’ve had to work out a few growing pains. “Breakfast has to come out of the kitchen hot and fast. And the food has to be high-quality.”

The Lutfi’s on Main Street is the only venue operating under the Lutfi’s name that is offering breakfast dishes. This restaurant is open every day, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
