KC Sipps: Two juicy new canned KC bevs, Thanksgiving for one, and The Black Pantry party
This week's Kansas City restaurant news.
Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.
That’s where I come in.
I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!
Something New
Mean Mule: The Crossroads agave distillery and bar has a new product just in time for holiday celebrations. The canned Cranberry Fizz cocktail, at 8% ABV, has a tart and light blend of cranberry, ginger, rosemary, and orange. The four-pack retails for $14.99 and is available at Mean Mule now and many local stores within a week. It is also available to order at Mean Mule if you’d like to try it before buying a pack to take home.
Boulevard Brewing Co.: There’s a new addition to the Space Camper IPA family. Juice Nova Superstellar IPA is being released over the next week and will be a permanent part of the Boulevard lineup. Juice Nova is not for the faint of heart with its 9% ABV, but the bright citrus is like a ray of sunshine in these colder months. Personally, I pick up more of the mango than the passionfruit notes. With a beer this strong, I expected to take just a few sips but ended up finishing the whole thing–returning for more sips of the happy-tasting brew.
Today’s Tip
Turkey for one! Many restaurants are offering Thanksgiving catering, as I mentioned last week. However, Scott’s Kitchen and Catering–a Northland BBQ spot–is doing something that I think more people need to know about. For many possible reasons, ordering a full catering set may not be what you need. How about just one or two plates of Thanksgiving food? Scott’s is offering carry-out and dine-in plates of turkey, turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and a roll. Preorders are due this Friday for pickup on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Closing
The Paleta Bar: Overland Park’s colorful paleta shop announced a temporary closure. The last day for custom frozen treats is November 24. The shop announced a temporary closure but has not provided a reason or an anticipated reopening date.
November 22
Buffalo State Pizza: At the Crossroads location, Buffalo State is hosting all things French. The annual Beaujolais Nouveau wine party features food and drink specials and live music from Prairie Village’s Made In France Band from 6 – 9 p.m. I don’t know exactly what the specials are, but I recommend the Green Queen pizza or the Tuscan Turkey sandwich.
November 23
The Black Pantry: Congrats on four years of highlighting Black-owned businesses, The Black Pantry! From 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., join in the celebration with 10% off all items, plus food and drink from Orange by Devoured, TC’s Fully Loaded, and Good Karma Coffee Co. This Martini Corner shop is a great place to pick up a book, bottle of wine, or art for holiday gifting.
November 24
Gnarly Hussle: The thrift store/bar (yes, the coolest combo of 2024) in Raytown is hosting a Turkey Bowl starting at 9 a.m. The morning will kick off with a co-ed flag football game and free Garage Beer, then a Friendsgiving-style potluck will wrap up the IRL game and start the Chief’s game watch party. Gnarly’s got the turkey covered, you bring the rest.
Wild Child: Buckets on Buckets returns to Shawnee’s Wild Child. Reservations are available for this popular event, where James Beard Award-nominated Jeff Workman partners with the one and only Jay Sanders; a dynamic duo serving up the perfect pairing. $100 per person secures you a seat, bottomless buckets of champagne, and bucket(s) of fried chicken.
Plan Ahead
Westport Cafe: Paradise Midwest is hosting a party at 2016 Event Space in Crossroads on November 27, and the fun kicks off with a dinner by Westport Cafe. Tickets are $59 for the dinner and access to the after-party. The dinner theme is Frenchgiving, featuring a six-course tasting menu representing regions of France, plus six wine stations with cheese pairings, and a dessert + wine finisher.
Westport Landing: For college students on break, young adults visiting home, and many other groups of people seeking some escape just before Thanksgiving, November 27 is an unofficial holiday of its own. Drinksgiving will be officially celebrated at Westport Landing with $1 wells until 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Plus, they’re giving away ten free bottles through their Instagram.
