Kansas City’s Health Department gives awards!

A week after the Kansas City Health Department suspended business at the New York Bakery & Delicatessen for numerous health violations, they announced — whew! — some good news!

Yes, there are clean restaurants in the River City!

Today the City of Kansas City, Missouri Health Department announced the recipients of its Fifth Annual Grade A Food Excellence Award. Fifty-five establishments qualified for the award this year, including full-service restaurants, fast-food establishments, school cafeterias, convenience stores, and grocery stores.

The press release put it this way: “The award recognizes food establishments that have continuously demonstrated excellence in compliance with the city’s food codes and other public health standards established by the Health Department. The awards are valid for one year.”

There were some obvious winners, like Bluestem Restaurant (who needs a James Beard Award after this great honor, I ask you!) or the spotlessly clean Russell Stover’s Candy Shop at 320 E. 51st Street. But also on the list was the McDonald’s at 3741 Broadway, the Burger King at Terminal B at the airport, the 7-11 at 3150 Gillham Road and the Culver’s Frozen Custard & Butterburgers at 7953 State Line Road (that one didn’t surprise me either, it’s impeccably tidy).
