The Jackson County Regional Animal Shelter has an opening date. And this time, it’s for real. KMBC reports that the Jackson County Legislature voted last night to fund the operation of the new $5.3 million animal shelter in Independence, which has been vacant since last summer.

The no-kill shelter will be run by Great Plains SPCA. Back in December, The Pitch’s Ben Palosaari wrote about the delays in getting the facility open as the Independence City Council voted to delay a decision on giving Jackson County funds that could then be used to subcontract the operation of the shelter to Great Plains SPCA. The shelter is expected to open April 9.
