Is ‘Starbucks Restroom Attendant in Times Square’ the worst possible job in the service industry?

  • Bathroom attendant is a tough gig.

I’ve thought for the past several years that the bathroom attendants in the Power & Light District might have the most thankless service-industry job in Kansas City. Inside the porcelain tile of the bathroom adjacent to the outdoor living room, there are plenty of men behaving badly, and courtesy (unlike the stunning array of mints usually available) is in short supply. Those two factors have always led me to think that the attendants who hold court there deserve some kind of hazard pay.

That said, I’ve got to believe that nothing could quite compare with being a Starbucks restaurant attendant in Times Square, a potential holiday position with the coffee giant that was unearthed by Gawker. When you combine a crush of humanity with the lack of public restrooms, the result is likely the bathroom of The Road or Trainspotting. On the bright side, minimum wage in New York is $7.25 per hour. So, yeah, there is no bright side. We’ve all had terrible jobs, but have you endured anything that could hold a candle to what would have to be the worst restaurant job on the books?
