Ian McLagan and the Bump Band

It’s been a good year for Faces fans. The group that wrung out the last bit of mod from the Small Faces and bottled the bluesy grappa as the best-ever Rolling Stones aperitif got the four-disc Rhino treatment over the summer with the essential Five Guys Walk Into a Bar. And founding keyboardist Ian McLagan issued the tough, infectious Rise & Shine, only his fifth solo disc in the three decades since the Faces disbanded so that guitarist Ron Wood could join the Stones and singer Rod Stewart could embark on a Quixotic second career attacking his own Faces-given credibility. (Every Rod, Ronnie and Keith in rock history is present in McLagan’s rollicking late-’90s memoir, All the Rage.) McLagan, whose post-Faces work as a session player alone merits close study, brings his modest legend and his crack band to town Thursday.
