KC Sipps: Two “new” burger joints open now, plus foodie classes and events that give back

Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.

That’s where I come in. 

I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!

Something New

News Bites: A few area bars are celebrating milestones this weekend with deals and events. Something Good, in downtown KC’s Garment District, is celebrating one year on July 25 with a party featuring food and drink specials, a DJ, and art—no ticket required. Blue Palm Tiki in Strawberry Hill is celebrating two years open with a party on July 25 and brunch on the 26th. From 2 – 5 p.m. on July 25, Blue Palm Tiki will offer complimentary food, drink specials, and a boozy snocone pop-up. 

Parkville’s Acre has reached its four-year milestone of serving hearth-cooked locally-grown and raised dishes. In River Market, Double Tap VR Bar is holding a week of specials in honor of their sixth anniversary. From Mad Dog Monday with Diana Condori on July 27 to emo brunch and bingo for Operation Breakthrough on August 2, check out the spectrum of fun here. 

Opening

Sauced: Just off Main Street and across the street from its previous location, Sauced has reopened. After closing last fall, then serving at FIFA Fan Fest for a few weeks, fans of the casual burger and chicken sandwich shop will be happy to be able to visit again from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., but as with most newly opened joints, the hours may change.

Disco Burger: As a soft-opening phase, Disco Burger’s new location in Brookside is now serving burgers and fries from the walk-up window. Neither the interior nor the patio is completed yet, so you’ll have to take your food to-go for now. It is open Thursday – Sunday, from 4 – 9 p.m., and orders must be placed online. The original River Market location, parked at Varsity Club, remains open as well.

Neat: A new cocktail spot is celebrating its grand opening on July 25. Neat, in Lenexa City Center, will be open 4 p.m. to 12 or 1 a.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays. No reservations are required (for groups of 5 or fewer), and the menu features a wide selection of cocktails, spirits, beer, wine, low/no ABV options, and nuts as bar snacks. 

Closing

Panther’s Place: The clandestine and lush bar space in the Westside area has announced that it will not reopen in the same place next year. Panther’s Place will remain open through October, but plans to reopen next season at a new location (not yet publicized). A couple of months remain to stop in for a drink, which I do recommend. 

July 26

Deviant Kava: The Parkville kava, coffee, and tea shop is holding a day full of special guests. From 10 a.m. until sellout, Fullproof Donuts will offer $5 filled sourdough donuts, including five sweet flavors and one savory. At 2 p.m., Reshma Ryan will lead a yoga class, and at 3 p.m., Elephant Wings will be on site selling three varieties of Indian-inspired tacos.

July 27

Overland Park Convention Center: Chef David Ruiz is putting on a dinner to celebrate the flavors of summer. Cultivate is a one-night-only dining experience, featuring local ingredients such as Missouri peaches, ribeye, heirloom tomatoes, and more. Tickets are $150 each, and only a few remain. 

Plan Ahead

Novella Cafe: At the Green Hills Library location, Novella is hosting a milk steaming and art class on July 31. The class is free and open to all levels, but registration is required. It starts at 6 p.m. As I shared last week, this is the cafe that recently took ownership of Garden House Cafe. 

Brown & Loe: Brown & Loe in City Market is giving back to Kanbe’s Market with a festive evening of plant-themed bingo. From 4 – 6 p.m., guests can enjoy three rounds of the game, plus plant prizes, complimentary snacks, and more. Tickets start at $35, and a portion of the proceeds benefit Kanbe’s mission to address food waste and food insecurity.
