Historic Kansas City hosts “Legacy series” happy hour at Twin City Tavern tonight

One of the oldest saloons in Kansas City — the Twin City Tavern, at 1815 Westport Road — is the setting tonight for the third “Legacy Bars & Restaurants” networking event. It’s casual and open to the public and is hosted by KC Modern and Young Preservationists KC, both affiliate groups of Historic Kansas City.
Today’s 5:30 p.m. gathering is, according to Historic Kansas City Executive Director Amanda Crawley, a “way for younger people interested in the role that neighborhood bars, restaurants and cafes played in the development of Kansas City to connect with those legendary eateries, watering holes and haunts.”
The series was created after several longtime iconic Kansas City restaurants — most recently, the 65-year-old Golden Ox in the West Bottoms — closed after decades of serving the Kansas City community.
Crawley says the previous two gatherings were held at Cascone’s Restaurant in the Northland and Fred P. Ott’s on the Country Club Plaza — venues that have, not coincidentally, operated at least 35 years.

The next Legacy series event will be August 13. “We are tentatively planning to host it,” Crawley says, “at the American Restaurant.”
