Have you ever sent a dish back to the kitchen?

I can still picture the steak that I sent back to the kitchen. It was more cow than steak and seemed to bleat its protest when I approached the peppercorn-encrusted bark with my steak knife. I sent it back, knowing full well that I’d probably get a steak on the charred side of the spectrum.

Sending your meal back is the nuclear option for diners. There’s no ambiguity about your feelings toward the food in front of you. But there are also a few rules governing the dance. You can’t complain about an entree after clearing your plate. You have to ask for a redo within the first few minutes or bites.
