Grill out with Slow Food this weekend

Jasper Mirabile has been following the burger craze. “I’m telling you, they are hot right now. Hamburgers. Sliders especially. People are demanding better burgers.” The consummate restaurateur, Mirabelle gives the people what they want, and as Convium Chair (fancy name for president) of Slow Food Kansas City, he’s letting people know they can make an amazing burger using all locally grown ingredients. “It’s about bringing out an awareness of what this city has,” he says.
This Saturday from 2-4 p.m., members of the organization are firing up the grill for Build a Better Burger, Locally. “We’ve got the guys from Blanc Burgers + Bottles and they’re bringing all their spreads. And the meat is from Amy’s Meat [located just outside of Lawrence] and the buns from Farm to Market. We even have local sodas. Louisburg Cider and Lost Trail root beer,” Mirabile says.
The event features three different styles of burger — beef, pork and chicken — along with Guy’s Chips. There may even be a little special dessert.
The picnic takes place in Watt’s Mill right outside of Jasper’s eponymous restaurant. All the money raised goes to help the non-profit group with scholarships and farms. It’s $10 for Slow Food Members and $15 for non-members, though the goal is that everyone will leave a member. “We’re just going to be out there having a good time and hanging out, and anybody can come and learn about what we’re doing and eat these amazing burgers,” Mirabile says.
