Getting a big, hot dose of ‘Jewish penicillin’

For the fifth year in a row, Congregation B’nai Jehudah in Overland Park has hosted a chicken-soup competition as a “fun-raising” event for its members, says development director Deborah Goldstein. I’ve been invited to judge the entries for several years, and yesterday’s cook-off — with both amateur and professional categories — had perfect timing. I have a cold.

The judges were mostly nonprofessionals, though there was at least one current chef present and two former restaurant owners, Gary and Mary Schanzer, who are now out of the culinary business.
