Get ready for the KC Urban Farms and Garden tour

While the main event isn’t until next week, the KC Urban Farms and Garden Tour is putting on 10 days of pre-tour activities to spread its message of food sustainability.

Tonight at the Plaza Branch of the KCMO Library is “My Blooming Garden” a story-time for children to learn about all the things they can grown in their own back yards. The kids get help planting their own seeds to take home. The event is free and begins at 7 p.m.

Saturday features a cooking class on raw food basics at the Tony Aguirre Community Center, in which participants learn to prepare wheat-free and dairy-free fettuccine Alfredo along with nut milk, two salad dressings and other dishes. The class, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., costs $34. Sign up at the Communiversity Web site.

Also on Saturday, archeologist Gina Powell provides a native dietary lesson from the Osage Indians. The program takes place at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark (107 Osage Street, Sibley, MO 64088) and starts at 1 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for seniors.

At the Ruiz Branch of the KCMO Library, veterinarian Charlotte Clifford-Rathert explains the hassles, pleasures and legalities of raising farm animals within city limits. The free talk begins at 2 p.m. Saturday.

At the Trails West Branch in Independence on Sunday is a talk about how to eat local in Kansas City. It’s hosted by members of the KC Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Coalition and KC Food Circle. The event is free and begins at 2 p.m.

Finally, on Sunday, is a workshop on starting your own urban farm. This covers the basics all the way through the process of selling some of your goods. The workshop takes place at the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture in KCK (4223 Gibbs Road) from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
