Foodoo is out, the Bite is moving in
Midtown Kansas City may be losing a vegan restaurant, but it’s gaining another Bite.
The Bite, the popular sandwich shop opened last year by Carlos Mortera and two co-owners in the River Market, will be moving into the Foodoo space by mid-March. Foodoo was another Mortera creation, but officially closed today after eight months of serving fresh fruit smoothies and clever meatless dishes like a pasta Bolognese with a soy-based “Italian sausage.”
We started hearing rumors about Foodoo — the vegan cafe and juice bar at 3605 Broadway — back in November when Mortera stopped serving dinners in the small, narrow dining room. Mortera told The Pitch at the time that he had no plans to close. Three months later, he closed the venue.
The restaurant space — which had a long run as Nabil’s and later as the Grille on Broadway — has had a checkered recent history, including the short-lived Mr. Good Chicken. Mortera says he’ll be changing the interior decor for the new Bite restaurant, which will be open for lunch and dinner. He’s immediately attending to a more pressing issue: “The sub-flooring behind the bar needs to be replaced,” he says. “When that’s completed, we’ll be ready to open for business.”
The menu for the new Bite will have the same sandwich selection as the River Market location, but Mortera plans to offer a daily brunch menu and family-style dinners for larger groups. “I’ll be serving the kinds of food that I like to eat with my family,” he says.
A family-style dinner suggests glasses of wine, but that will be a later development. “We will be applying for a liquor license,” Mortera says, “but in the meantime, we’ll offer agua fresca drinks, like horchata.”
Patrons at the new fast-casual Bite will order at a counter and their meals will be brought out to them. Mortera says that the midtown restaurant will stay open until 10 or 11 p.m. and — to take advantage of the bar business in the neighborhood — he’ll park a Bite food truck near the restaurant for late, late night dining.
