Food Network deems banh mi and speck state sandwich of Kansas and Missouri

  • The banh mi at Kim Long market.

The cuisines of Missouri and Kansas are being celebrated without a mention of barbecue, pork tenderloins or fried chicken. Either we’re making progress or somebody only had time for a few bites. Food Network has put together a list of 50 sandwiches to represent the 50 states.

The Kansas entry is a banh mi from My Tho in Wichita, Kansas, while Missouri’s state sandwich is the speck from Salume Beddu (incorrectly labeled as Blanc Burgers + Bottles on the site; perhaps the KC burger joint got stuck in the reviewer’s head) in St. Louis. The network is running a television special in conjunction with the list to air on the Cooking Channel on Sunday, August 19, at 7 p.m.
