Fish-fry season begins this weekend

Yes, it’s all Mardi Gras and beads and booze tonight, so live it up. Lent begins tomorrow, kicking off  fish-fry season in Kansas City – and with plenty of opportunity to eat meatlessly for the next six Fridays during the Lenten season. No matter what your religious affiliation, these modestly priced meals – fish, shrimp or some other meatless alternative (usually, but not always, available for diners who don’t care for seafood) – can be a cost-effective way to take a family out to eat.

For the last several years, Fat City has listed the area churches offering these meatless meals. If you have additional questions (directions, prices), we suggest contacting them directly. One of the most thorough calendars for choosing the most convenient fish fry can be found by clicking here.

I asked Marty Denzer, reporter with the Catholic Key, which church has the snazziest fish fry – if such a thing even exists.

“St. Margaret of Scotland in Lee’s Summit has a maître d’ who escorts patrons to their table and waiters who bring the meals out to them, instead of people going through a cafeteria line,” Denzer says.

St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church (777 N.E. Blackwell Road) will be serving fried fish and shrimp dinners each Friday through April 11. The fish or peel-and-eat shrimp are priced at less than $11. The church is also offering – for a $200 donation – dinner, drinks, dessert for eight served in the VIP dining room; a private waiter – for two seatings each night, at 5 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. To reserve the private room, call 816-246-6800.

Guardian Angels Catholic Church (1310 Westport Road) holds its fish fry this Friday, March 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. The $7 dinner includes a choice of fried or baked fish or a fish taco served with hush puppies, coleslaw, and a choice of coffee or fruit punch. Desserts (and soda or beer) are available for an additional charge.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians – Padraig Pearse Division #1 is hosting shrimp dinners in the cafeteria of the Redemptorist Church at 3333 Broadway starting this Friday, March 7, and continuing each Friday through April 11. The meal is priced at $14 for adults, with reduced prices for children and free for children ages 5 and younger. The maximum cost for a family will be $36. The meal will feature boiled shrimp, baked fish, cheese pizza, side dishes, coffee, tea or lemonade. It’s available dine-in or carryout.
