Fat Guy Bakery & Cafe opens at 5536 Troost

Reggie Collier’s one-month-old bakery — Fat Guy Bakery & Cafe —  may have the smallest glass pastry case in Kansas City, but he tries to keep it filled.

This morning, that pastry case inside the green-and-yellow storefront at 5536 Troost contained fat chocolate brownies, three kinds of  pound-cake slices (cherry, lemon and cinnamon swirl), and sugary yeast doughnuts. Collier, who opens every morning at 10 a.m., says he sells out of his pastries early, but then he starts making other things.

“Burgers, fries, barbecue and chicken,” Collier says.

The renovation of the storefront — formerly occupied by Greedy Man’s Bar-B-Que — took Collier and his friends five months, including outfitting a new kitchen with ovens, a grill and fryers. It’s strictly a carryout operation, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m Monday through Saturday.
