Drinking for Democracy

BY OWEN MORRIS
You can practice actual democracy this fall by voting. Until then, you can practice fun boozy democracy by drinking. Starting last night and running until November’s election, The Flying Saucer in the Power & Light District is selling collectible pint glasses bearing the likenesses of Barack Obama and John McCain (sorry Bob Barr fans) and keeping track of how many it sells of each, with the tally posted daily.
Matt Eyeman, manager of the Flying Saucer, sent me an e-mail saying that teetotalers are more than welcome to participate. “For this promotion you would be buying the glass and the glass alone. What you decide to put in it is your business, including nothing. We’re expecting some people to just walk in, buy a large number of glasses for their candidate, and walk back out.”
I’d like to see the Flying Saucer add a rule that you can only fill your cup with an American beer.
