Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar…now Dollar Chinese!
Everyone’s looking for a bargain these days, which is why the dollar stores — the 21st century version of the “five and dime” chains of a much earlier era — have become a popular shopping destination in the current economy. But a new carry-out only venue in Kansas City, Kansas may be setting a new culinary trend. The tiny storefront at 1035 Minnesota at 1035 Minnesota Avenue is called Dollar Chinese.
The menu is extremely limited and not everything costs a buck: an order of eggrolls or crab rangoon can be had for a dollar. Ditto a dish of fried rice or noodles. But if you want chicken with that rice or those noodles, it’s $2 extra. If you’d rather have shrimp, beef or pork, it’s an extra three George Washingtons.
The dollar specials are served exclusively during the lunch shift, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. But even after 3 p.m., the food is still pretty cheap.
