Does Kansas City have a hot dog “style?”

Did you know there was such a thing as a Kansas City hot dog? No, it doesn’t involve barbecue sauce.
According to a report on this morning’s CBS Early Show featuring Real Simple magazine editor Sarah Humphries, there is such a thing as a “Kansas City Dog.” The dog is described at cbsnews.com as a “take on the Ruben” — that’s right, a misspelling of the Reuben sandwich, a culinary creation that has absolutely no historical connection to Kansas City, by the way — with sauerkraut and melted swiss cheese.
Who knew? According to the three local hot dog devotees I called about this sandwich, they had never heard of a Kansas City Dog before, but they were all up for sampling one.
