Do you want innovative or classic doughnuts?

Doughnuts right now are like grandmas with iPads. Some are ready for this brave new world, while others are struggling to keep the darn things in front of their faces. The world – or perhaps the media machine that uses New York City as a fusion engine – is currently obsessed with cronuts. The croissant-doughnut hybrid was invented by chef Dominique Ansel this past May, and the world of online eaters can’t stop telling the offline world about the pastry and the line of people waiting to eat the pastry.
Meanwhile, back in Kansas City, we’ve got the chocolate old-fashioneds at Hana’s Donuts. But for those who need a little zing, there’s still red velvet and rainbow-sprinkled. So, round-cake eaters, here’s the quandary: Are doughnuts in need of a cakeover or does grandma really know best?
